Dear Friends,
I am looking for a GUI mp3 player for linux. I asked Mr. Google but he is giving me text based, command line or console based players. I even downloaded one package called zinf-2.2.5 but it has a long compilation required. There are a lot of bits and pieces available on the net like tools, plugins etc.
I am looking for one which is fully self equipped, that comes with an 'install' shell script file that will install it into my selected directory and will give me a simple 'player_name' script to double click and run ( just as we simply install and run mozilla firefox or thunderbird ).

IIRC, OP uses RHES 3, and hence will need to do the usualy getting of libmp3 and installing it first.
There is also XMMS.

Why not apt-get install xmms? Or rpm -i xmms, whatever.

It works. I went to the other player sites but they don't have a direct install. There is some plugin or the other support required. Xmms is already in my RHEL as I found out when I tried to load its rpm but there are some proprietory or liscence issues due to which, RHEL does not support mp3 in xmms. The rpms for some players are upto RH8 or 9 so thats another problem.
For the newbies, realplayer is the best bet.

I second that. Further, realplayer has a noticably slower startup time & takes up more resource in general. XMMS has no such issues & works beatifully.

I didn't say anything to the contrary. I'm talking about redhat's distribution policy. They're the only distro with this problem, and unfortunately, have the largest market share among newbies.
As far as newbies are concerned, redhat is linux.

I understand how you feel Philip. I have RHEL installed in my machine only due to the course I am doing. Too many linux flavours cannot be installed together in one HDD and constant loading, reloading, formatting may damage its MBR or other sectors. My XP is the main OS where I do most of my computing like email, office, scanner, printing, surfing etc and important data is stored there. Even my linux downloads are done in XP which gives my modem above 5 Kbps speed. The linux free driver limits it to 1.5 Kbps. The vfat partition is then mounted in linux and the downloaded files are transferred. All linux related emailing is done in linux.
The newbies cannot jump straight into complex settings and compilations in linux or for that matter any OS. They have to go step by step with the simpler options first and then go deeper and deeper. The information available from the experts here is most usefull and precious and I keep all the emails intact for future reference too.

I have three linux flavours installed simultaneously on my box at home. If you can dual boot windows and linux then why not triple boot linux, linux and linux?

I hope someone out there has had this problem or atleast seen it, and can offer some help.
The problem I am having is installing PostNuke on my FC3 system. I get to the point where it checks the file permissions and if just fails. I set the file permission to the recommended ones. And on top of that I tried changing the onwer of the directories. Still no joy. The respective directories are owned by apache and now all have perms of 777. Still my PostNuke is not seeing them as writable. I know the problem is not in PostNuke. Either some security feature in httpd or php because this is not the only php application that is having this problem.

Try disableing selinux /etc/init.d/selinux stop and then give it a shot.

I am sure that later you will want, JAVA, FlashPlayers, browser (email client and file manager) opening doc, xls, sxc, .... automatically. In short you need SuSE. SuSE comes preconfigured for all this.
