Hi Guys
I am in a process of installing Linux on production server. I need some information (link)on how to allocate harddisk space for /, /boot, /home, /usr, /var, /tmp, swap, /opt.

The yardstick that defines the allocation of Spaced on the Storage media depends on the intended application. What would be the intended application for this machine.

There is a howto on that available be www.tldp.org.
Redhat documentation also deal with these issues very well.
Simple rule of thumb.
Put as much space depending on application.
www server larger var file server larger home mail server larger var application server larger area for application installed home machine loads of swap etc etc
But things are definately dependent on what applications you run

But you dont have to worry about that, atleast not until you have to. Assuming you have large enough harddisk, you can play around with all these when you think you have to, and with some priliminary caution you will be able to alter one configuration to another in a running system. You can resize partitions, change their types, merge or split partition at will at nearly any stage. Just keep a knoppix CD handy.
Careful planning always help and all, and I am not discouraging that, just highlighting the enormous flexibility/potential/options you get when you chose Linux.
