Hi, Here is something to get you started. With these two patches you should be able to compile vmware workstation. You can download vmware workstation for free from :
http://downloads.vmware.com/d/
Patches here will help you compile vmware on 2.6.30 kernel. This worked for me on fedora 11.

As far as possible stay with the VBox OSE version. The lic. terms for the binary versions on VBox site is non-commercial and home use IIRC.
Linux kernel based KVM is another alternative.
