Is it possible to receive email directly to my PC if I have a static IP address (cable net)? i.e. without using yahoo or my isp.
I plan to keep my PC powered on all the time.
If I can send mail without externel smtp server of isp or yahoo etc. (with the help of sendmail) I should also be able to receive mail right?
Please enlighten

If you have a domain name registered, then yes, for that domain. I don't know how you register an MX. That's what you need to do.

You won't need that. But dialup IPs tend to be in blackholes.

Yes it is possible ...... but Not on Natted IP(although possible through port forwarding)... in this case your email adress will be you@[ip.ad.re.ss] ( your ip address in square bracket). alternatively register a domain and set the MX to point to your IP ....

MX (aka Mail eXchanger) records are DNS records that specify where mail for a domain should go. See th 4th Edition of DNS and Bind for details (ORA). Then get your ISP to setup a proper public static IP for you, with reverse DNS, and get them to delegate the forward authority to you(if possible).
Setup the DNS first and then all the rest should work automagically.
