What video card does the machine have? Also, if you have the hardware details try to generate the xorg.conf manually using dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. Also, I am not sure if mint has the right drivers available for the video adaptor.

Can't see any image. Only a placeholder. However, display can be reconfigured using 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' in command line.

Practically speaking *dont* use Mint 5 if this is the case. Try using a distro whose Live CD works with your hardware *out of the box*. Try Lenny, Ubuntu, Fedora. From my experience Redhat / Redhat based distros generally have played better with graphics hardware. Worth a try. But its not worth debugging the problem with Linux Mint.
