Does anyone have info on a realtime/almost realtime mail backup system using sendmail 8.9?

mail backups as in mirroring the mailboxes? Or as in using a backup MX?
If just a backup MX, set appropriate DNS records for the servers, and configure the second to accept mail for the domains handled by the first.

This would be a problem only iff you are trying to synchronise mailboxes, I would recommend rsync+ssh (and use Maildir for the mailboxes rather than mbox).
