Hi,
To continue with my own post and to be a little immodest.
Have a look at this http://personal.vsnl.com/rajeshr/chintoo.html. Had done this around 2 yrs back. Motivation was to build a Digital Photo Frame with a VGA LCD display. But the LCD turned out to be the most expensive part of the setup so dropped the idea.
Motherboard is a Via C3 800 MHz based Mini-Itx board. Harddisk was normal 20GB. Power supply was 145 Watts Emachines powersupply. Memory was PC133 512MB. Still have the set up but in a normal PC case.
For the remote, built the LIRC <www.lirc.org> receiver from components (3D construction :-), no boards). Still have it with me. Used my normal DVD remote control as the transmitter.
