Hi List,
Apparently, somebody at Sify is having a lot of fun at customer's expense. So today sometime in the afternoon some nice admin or someone with admin rights decided - "OK, lets see what happens if I block 143 and 993. Should be fun, I am sure." Or probably the dude pressed the wrong next and "Are you sure? OK" button.
Afaics, I can't telnet to port 143/993 on IMAP servers that I use. I am sure the servers are working because I know others are using it just fine and I even saw their telnet output.
I have lodged a complaint with sify helpline - it took few hours to get through the executive. First hit - some dude in Vile Parle kept me on hold for few minutes. I cut the phone and called them again, this time the call was directed to Chennai ( even thought I selected "Technical query" ). The dude listened to me and suddenly popped the most important question ever - "Do see the network card?" . I pretty much went "Huh?". I explained to him that everything else is working - like surfing, chatting, emailing - yes those words they understand easily. I was promised that the techie dude will call me in an hour. I am waiting. In the meanwhile I called again and this time a girl spoke to me who ended the discussion with "Yes yes, I can see your complaint. We will call you as soon as it is solved.
I would really appreciate, some users in Mumbai, if they could some how check if IMAP is working from their Sify accounts. I know that many people don't use IMAP so chances might just be low. Thanks in advance.
Cheers!

Hi! Pradeepto,
I would recommend that you seriously consider switching ISP. I have used sify in past and when you hit a problem its really difficult to get it resolved. Writing to list, making phone calls would prove futile, as the people managing the network are dumb heads (like most of the ISPs). Sify would have hired an equally dumbhead sysadmin or 'security consultant' who is blocking ports like anything. But problem with sify is, there executives dont listen at all. They cant understand things nor do they try to understand anything, unless you have a corporate connection. When things dont work out only resort with sify would be to move to consumer court (I know people in Delhi who have done this).

I am considering a change, but I am not sure I have too many options in Panvel. I have triband ( I went to the MTNL office today morning ) and don't realy know if there are any other services here. Probably Tata Indicom.
Point here is if all ISPs are like that then where do we go? I know Sify was crazy enough at one point of time when it use to block 6667 since IRC is such a security threat. If anything, IRC is a time and attention sink :P.

Hmmmm .... I wonder if thats true. Some how I won't be surprised. One year back they had blocked login for all Linux users - I know many on this list had the problem and there were discussions in different forum websites. It took 7 days to solve the whole freaking issue. And by then the case was escaltated to "group leader" after which it was solved in exactly 30 minutes.

I have been wondering about this. Do you know what was the result of the cases? Did they win? Or Sify sent a car full of lawyers in their defence.
Cheers!

Imo sify is the worst and MTNL the "best" in Mumbai. In Navi Mumbai MTNL is not as good as Mumbai as far as service is concerned. This is particularly so in Airoli and Koparkhairane. MTNL has a 1mnth wait list for ADSL connections in Thane and Navi Mumbai.

A famous quote: "I complained that I could not SSH or Telnet when I saw a guy whose phones were dead since 12 days." :-D

All linux user would have blocked corporate users too, thus triggering a chain of complaints. Again, gives strength to my hypothesis of dumbhead sysadmin.

Yeah. Makes me wonder what the use of blocking all those outgoing ports is.
Hi,
Since last few hours I think they fixed the problem partially. Only 143 has been opened but 993 is still blocked as far as I can see. Just to give you an idea, I have been trying thier helpline number most of the weekend but only managed to get though yesterday and I was promised "do ghante mein thik ho jaayega. koi aapko phone karega." Oh and they asked me for remote IP again. I wonder what do they do with that.
Cheers!

Instead of SSL on port 993; see if TLS is supported on 143.

Why don't you give it as 127.0.0.1?

Did it occur that you might want to blog about it ? Anyway, do read up the fine print on your contract with Sify and check if negligence to revert has any compensation-to-customer clause

Did it occur to you that we are living in India? I have previously considered blogging about my VSNL experience, and I will certainly do so now - I also have the complaint numbers from February written down! But who will read my blog? Who will raise a ruckus?
As far as I know, service providers like Sify and VSNL will just act complacently, knowing that the customers are generally locked in and do not usually have the time or the means to drag them to consumer court.

Does living in India mean that you don't get folks to respond to blogs ? http://sankarshan.randomink.org/blog/2006/05/28/just-one-of-those-things/ helped me howl around. And yes I did finally get the pittance of the refund. A blog I guess adds to the formal letter of "Dear Sir/Ma'am, With reference to my repeated complaints regarding your completely fscked up connection ..."
But, given your reply I sometimes doubt whether the mere "I live in India where nothing happens" is the main reason why service providers get away - thanks for reminding me about that.

If they are "service providers" they enter into some form of contract with you (perhaps you hastily signed/clicked-accepted one). Do look it up if you have.

I seriously doubt sify would have given a contract.

Hi again.
IMAP blocked at my end too. Can receive mails via SMTP, but not IMAP.
BTW, I'm tired of Sify too. Anyone know of an alternative in the Navi Mumbai area? I need unlimited access, without any cap on data transfer.
Regards, NMK,
PS: Does any of the other ISPs allow DC++, the fantastic lan sharing software? (http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net) Sify does, and thats one reason I'm haven't switched yet.

Then check out with Exatt (http://www.xbroadband.in). They have unlimited plans and local lan access too. No port blocks at all.

Is this 'operator' reliable? Last year, I was trying to get their connection in Pune. I couldn't even get to a working website. I thought they had closed down.

I just checked through their phone no. 022-6757 1500. They don't provide services in Kandivli (W), where I live :(
Anybody from this area who can suggest a service provider (except MTNL / VSNL)?
btw, you can also send queries to exatt at response_mum@exatt.com

A local form of 'File Sharing'. Some of my clients copy songs from others' pcs. :-D
