It's likely that it won't work out of the box. I'd recommend setting it up to boot into run level 3 by default. The major problem would be with X configuration, so once it boots into run level 3 on his computer, reconfigure X with the right display driver, and switch back to run level 5.

I have no idea how to do this, but I'll find out some documentation, and may be attempt it.

Yes. I would. I have "Use my signature" checked, by default, and when I forget to uncheck it before sending it to the list, the "biggie siggi" appears in the mail.
