Just curious, I know distro wars are bad, and well alot of people just say use what best suits you, I am just curious if anyone has had first hand experience between the 2. And if so which would be a more "debian" /apt way to go. And also have a nice clear interface to deal with out of the box, not to mention the support and ease of use.
A friend of mine is strongly considering moving away from all MS products. So much so he sold his xbox 360 and has been collecting for a while to be able to buy the ps3. I told him if hes loading up linux on his ps3, he might as well get the exposure on his desktop. After all, that baby will smoke his current AMD 2000.
So which distro would you guys suggest and between those 2 and if you have a specific reason why, would be nice so i can tell him. Also if i could grab a DVD off someone (maybe couriered) would be nice. Else I could just download it and have it in a week.
Thanks, Satish

Asking 'Ubuntu Vs Knoppix' from the end user perspective is like asking 'Veg. Biriyani vs Veg. (Fried) Rice'. The answer is 'Taste both of them and let you decide which you like it'.
If you ask a Debian guy, think he will say Knoppix is more Debianic than Ubuntu (may be the otherwise too). But of you interested on your friend to really feel that Linux desktops are much better than what he had been using, especially when your friend has some latest or weird configuration of hardware, then first try Ubuntu and then Knoppix. But, try *both*. Then, its upto him to decide which one he likes *more*.

Knoppix's focus is on being a livd-CD distribution, and it installs a wierd admixture of not-quite-unstable Debian on the hard drive. Ubuntu does indeed focus on living on the HD.
If you want a distribution for th long term, a LIVE CD performance might not be up to par; I would suggest either Etch or Ubuntu. And, if you want Debian, you might want to actually try out Debian -- but for a novice user, you are probably better off with Ubuntu/Kubuntu/some other derivative.

There are technical differences between the two.

Sorry to disappoint you :)

Knoppix is easy to try out, since it does not require a real install. I have no idea how close Ubuntu live CD's are to giveing someone a real ubuntu experience.

Well, while Manoj himself has spoken about Ubuntu/Kubuntu and friends being better for novices, I strongly feel that though the learning curve is steep for Debian, I would still prefer the Debian way. Somehow, my friends who have had a little GNU/Linux experience (more due to academic software requirements) have always felt stifled by Ubuntu's "user friendliness", such as having no root user by default, running apt in the background thus preventing a manual run etc. Also, I have *always* run into package/dependency woes in Ubuntu, though it might be more due to my bad luck.
Just my view. Of course, there is no denying that Ubuntu has brilliant artwork and nice features, but Debian is also getting there soon, while keeping the install sane. Another thing is that the Ubuntu forums are very helpful, and you can expect replies to queries pretty quickly. Of course, debian-user isn't any less...
Anyway, the comparisons are endless, and, as suggested, the only way to choose is try things out and emerge wiser in the process.

Knoppix is a self contained distro with Live and now Install option. There is no online repo support for it. Ubuntu is a distro meant to be installed but with a live option too. Ubuntu has online repo support.

I guess Knoppix is Debian testing. And can be used with standard debian mirrors. The sources.list already contain such entries.

In fact, there was a time when the easiest way to get a working Debian would be to install Knoppix and fill in the gaps using APT. However, I don't know whether people still do that, as the Debian installer (even the text based one), is quite easy to handle.
