i have a very old 2 gb harddisk with a fat32 partition. i seriuosly doubt it will survive a format and repartitioning. it alrady is making noise and is on edge of its lifetime.
is there any linux distro that can install (with X and few apps like mozilla, openoffice) on a fat32 partition ?

Why don't you try out Knoppix? You don't have to install anything but can read and write from you 'old-fat' harddisk if you want.

There are more than a couple of them. There used to be something called WinLinux or something on those lines with install support for FAT32.
