Hello All,
A friend of mine bought a branded pc with Vista installed. However no additional peripherals work as their drivers are not available in vista. I suggested that he install Linux in dual boot and he has agreed. I only want to know if Linux and Vista will live peacefully and boot from Grub. Does Vista have the same booting method as XP?

What I have seen in Vista is the same boot menu. So I guess it can still survive dual boot.
But I also wonder how does it matter. Be it any os for that matter dual booting should not be a problem as long as Linux could detect the other OSes residing in the disk. Could someone in the list sugges if it is good to generalise like that?

Dear Rony,
I've never tried it on a vista desktop, but i have had no issues with the same on vista laptops that i've installed on. just remember, take a backup of the MBR and Partition table via linux rescue mode first, if you want to be extra careful. Also, if it's a new system, i suggest you try out a 64 bit distro variant first, before you try a 32 bit variant. it'll give him a noticeable performance boost, and i'm sure he will enjoy the experience(remember to activate beryl and show him all the eye candy -- whip vista on his own *vista* system). If you have any issues, do feel free to get in touch with me off-list, and i can pass on a 64 bit fedora copy, and also help you with the install.

I was worried about vista's file system not being recognized by grub. Anyway since you have dual booted into both, it should work. I will look up the linux rescue utility.

He is using a home edition with no Aero and his mobo is 955, so 32 bit with Pentium dual core 2.8 GHz. Right now I am planning on Kubuntu as his use is only documents and internet. I will give him a live demo of Sabayon linux that has berryl loaded.

It doesn't matter if the filesystem is recognizable or not. All that grub or lilo do is load the first sector of the boot partition.
Either ways, I think Vista uses NTFS since WinFS never made it out.

Umm, now I know, why people installed Vista on NTFS partitions. I used to read about Longhorn (code for 'Vista') coming up with a new file system WinFS.

Still, check in the bios is em64t is supported. if yes, install the 64 bit version. it will work, and show him that his shipped windows is just 32 bit, while linux is 64, and tell him that vista is wasting some of the hardware capabilities...

^^^^^ About half. winfs was first called NT object filing system, with first release in - dont hold your breath - 96 and final ship in 97. Full ten years down the line vapour ware is M$ biggest product. Besides ofcourse offering proof about fools and money.
