I am using qmail as the MTA that serves 200 users. On an average 1500 mails and sent and 1500 received everyday on a 64K leased line. However there is a problem here. Due to insufficient and sometimes intermittent bandwidth, the qmail queue increases a lot especially if a certain mail is huge in size. Due to this, qmail defers delivery of local mails. All qmail processes seem to go to sleep. Though qmail accepts SMTP and POP connections during this time, it fails to deliver mails destined for the local domain. This results in the foll. message when I run 'qmailctl queue' : Messages in queue : 100 Messages in queue but not yet preprocessed: 134

After some time interval of 15 mins or so, suddenly all qmail process awake and the mail delivery begins. I have no problem with delay in outgoing mails but I do not want local mails to be deferred. This is extremely irritating to the users.

Can someone tell me the reason for this and the solution? Has someone faced this problem before?
