Hello group, respected seniours and my friends, here i present you the list(to be grown) of project names that can be done. I would request my friends to modify, comment and strongly request to add names to list. so that many pepls having interest and expert in some domain can come forward.

Hi, I am Saswata Banerjee. I am new in this group and am following the mails with interest.
I head a Cost Accounting firm. I think if you want to do things to make Linux more popular with Corporate users, we will need more of common office use software. If you wish to add an "Accounting Software" to your list of project, I will be willing to put in time to coordinate it (of course, someone here will have to tell me how this coordinating is done).
Regards saswata

Accounting software on linux...real ambitious.... If this is to be done, someone will have to spend *a lot* of time and effort providing the domain expertise....think about it... its not simple *co-ordination*

I think GNUCash is an account software which is already available. The only thing is that it has to be customised according to his/her needs.

[snip] Well then letz add gnucash to the list. I am sure we'll find studentz interestin in hackin it...to customise if for our Indian needs.

What about customising the Kernel and a distribution to work on Low end (read obsolete) PC's like P-100s ? These machines are available very cheaply and if they can be made available to poorer Schools... If companies could be contacted and convinced to denote their obsolete stuff for the cause... in any case most of the times old things are sold for scrap.

Why ? I am running PCQlinux 7.1 and Woody w/ dual boot on a P120 w/ 48mb ram with the *stock kernels*. It would be like re-inventing the wheel. Why fix it if it ain't broken ? And I compile most of the programs that I use regularly like mutt, gpg, and even the kernel. I even use the gui sometimes :).
regards,
Sharukh.

Can't fault this idea though.

Sharukh.

I have run X with Netscape on my 386 with 8MB - and not for fun. I used it for around 6 months. What I meant by customising the kernel was compiling it to work on older machines. It was not a big deal. Just collect useful software and compile them to run on slower machines with low RAM. Ditto the Kernel. Create such a ready to use distrib and maybe it can be put to some use. It is not reinventing the wheel - rather it is about selecting the right size wheel for one's vehicle. The stock kernel comes compiled for the 386 as it is supposed to work on most machines. But due to the same reason it has a _lot_ of unnecessary support built in it. I think the stock vmlinuz is around 950K while the one I use is around 445K.
Have you tried getting 16Mb 66MHz EDO RAM? It is almost impossible. Most of the older machines one finds has about 8-16-32 Mb RAM at the maximum. I was talking about old old machines. Which people are willing to donate. For example I have a 386 motherboard with 8Mb RAM which I can donate. But what school will accept it without seeing it do some useful work?

The kernel already works perfectly on Pentium class machines. It works perfectly on the i386 as well. IIRC, someone even ported it to 16bit Intel processors.
Still willing to do it. I think I can spend the required time.
When I said co-ordination, it was perhaps a worng word. The problem is that I have never worked on such a project (I mean distributed programming team) and have not really worked much on linux as such. All software development we have done is on windows platform.
I used "coordination" since I do not know what is actually required. but dont worry on the time factor, I can provide as much as is required. Domain expertise is also not a problem.
I think accounting software on linux is not that difficult a task as such. In fact, I know some companies who have developed linux based accounting software here in India. But not gui based or browser-based (I think that is where we should go finally).
The main problem with an accounts type of software is that while it is easy enough to create in the first place, it is necessary to evolve it......Add more features and let the software mature. That is what makes the project long-term
BTW, I am a BCom, AICWA (that standands for Cost Accountant) LLB. My partner is a CA Regards Saswata ----- Original Message ----- From: "Shankar Ramchandran" shankar_ramchan@vsnl.net To: linuxers@mm.ilug-bom.org.in Sent: Thursday, July 04, 2002 1:31 PM Subject: Re: [ILUG-BOM] Projects TODO list
