"I will contribute 500 Indian Rupees (or 10 USD) to Chamba Swathanthra Cinema Project but only if 100 other people will do the same."
— Praveen Arimbrathodiyil, Coordinator for Chamba Project
Deadline to sign up by: 1st January 2011 22 people have signed up, 78 more needed
More details Chamba project (http://www.chambaproject.in) is an ambitious effort to create a Swathanthra (Free/Libre) Animation Movie by pooling in contributions from people around the world and funding artists directly. It is an initiative to experiment and explore a more collaborative and open approach to film making, aiming to be appealing, easy to be a part of and easy to contribute for hobbyists, enthusiasts and professionals alike using FOSS tools, resources, and the power of social networking.
A donation system will be setup at http://www.chambaproject.in/contribute/ when we are ready to accept money.
You can add your name to the pledge at http://www.pledgebank.com/chambaproject
There are other ways you can help as well. See http://www.chambaproject.in/contribute/ for different ways of helping out. This is not just a movie project, it is a whole different way of creating culture, some models of which we are already familiar like Free Software, Wikipedia, OpenStreetMap, this time we are onto film making.
We need to reach out to maximum number of people and being a community initiative we depend on you to help us promote this project. Did you blog about this project? Did you share news about this project with your friends, colleagues, facebook/orkut/twitter/identi.ca contacts?
Are you a good designer? Can you create good posters and banners for this project? Make some nice ones and post it in the forum.
Think about more ideas to spread news about this project. The more people talk about this project, the higher its impact.
Cheers Praveen

I will contribute 500 Indian Rupees when I see some concrete action taken - so far I only see talk.

Fair enough. This was initial round, testing waters, see if there is an interest etc. We will come back with concrete actions as we progress. A week back it was just a mailing list discussion, now it has a project site, mailings lists, forums, wiki, people talking about it, people pledging support ... posters, banners, logos, promotional videos, story board are being worked on ...
We know it is a long journey. It is not just about the movie, but we see this an opportunity to talk about free culture. So already Free Movie festivals are being planned in at least 3 colleges.
Cheers Praveen

produce a two minute movie - I will take it up to some Bollywood actors and directors I know. If you make something, then money will flow - if you ask for money without any product to show - you will just irritate people.

OK, we will come back with a trailer as next step. Think of this as a call for participation only.

hate to nitpick - but it was labeled as an appeal for money.

I kind of agree with this . The first call should have been a call for participation/contribution rather than a pledge for 'cash' . Its quite understandable with community people but some times it gets misrepresented as yet another fund collection email .

Now that we are done with a call for cash, and if you are interested in the project, you can also do a call for participation. Look for things that needs to be done and compose a mail with that list and some ideas as to what it requires to get that done.
Thanks for volunteering.

that is a good proposal - I have been dying to get involved with a project like this for a long time. And my bollywood friends are cynically watching me ;-)

Here is a proof of concept video. http://vimeo.com/17279908 This is not a trailer of the movie, but created just to show capabilities of blender in a workshop Milad did last week. It was created over a week in his spare time. People pledging and donating money would help us fund some artists full time. We have not been getting much pledges, but, I believe an animation like this might persuade some people more than earlier requests based on belief in free culture or good intent of the team alone. Pledge link is here again http://www.pledgebank.com/chambaproject

Yesterday at Barcamp Kerala while Hiran V was proposing the Chamba project , there was lot of discussion on ' why not maya' and it also even went to a faculty of amritha questioning ' if you ask people to use blender you will get very less people ' and also suggested ' to use maya and release the code in public repo ' .
Watching that discussion and a similar one where I had to answer on "why not mapmaker, google, eart, kml etc " . It went to a suggestion to prepare a slideshow/table or presentation highlighting the usefullness/advantages of blender when compared to its propreitary alternatives .
I didn't want to compare something which I didn't use . If anyone has any links do share them .

We are doing this because we believe in Free Software (Free Software is also a part of Free Culture or rather Free Software idea is now extended to Free Culture). So there is no way we will settle for Maya when we have Blender. If people think more people will get involved if we use Maya, let them start another project with Maya. Lets see who wins :)
Another comparison I heard was that, Blender is Maruti 800 and Maya is Ford <some model>. So many people are happy with Maruti 800, it gets them to work everyday. Also it is energy efficient, so it is not just size or bells and whistles, if it lets to get your work done that is enough. Plus Blender being Free Software if something cannot be done right now, we can request it and it will get added. The whole purpose of 3 Open Movie projects from Blender was to test it against real world by creating movies. They added so many missing features required to make those movies.

if you base any activity on belief, you will fail. If you want to demonstrate that open source software is as good or better than closed source software, you will succeed. Because it is.

Well, these are the two prominent schools of thought. Free Software philosophy and Open Source model. I subscribe to the former thought and you to the latter. Lets work together on issues both of us agree on.

ahem - what does RMS say about using the above? or are you eclectic in your 'beliefs'?

It is a community project and people volunteer to do things. Hiran volunteered to maintain facebook page, Manuel Jose volunteered to maintain twitter page. I added statusnet. We have common agreements as a community. We cannot have same opinion in every issue. Most of what RMS says makes sense to me, but it does not automatically mean, whatever he says is right. We have our own ideas and experiences, so it influences our thought process, we are not blindly following RMS.
RMS himself uses identi.ca which is based on StatusNet. So there is no issue there. Twitter is optional, as it is a mirror of StatusNet. Facebook is an issue, but diaspora is a work in progress. Struggle to liberate web services has begun only recently. So it will take some more time for us to completely replace services like facebook (twitter is already replaced by StatusNet). It is similar to RMS using Unix to develop GNU until GNU/Linux was ready.

Ford with the hood welded shut, the fuel tank sealed, the dicky with 5 crocs AND only ONE person allowed to use.
