Morning Fellas,
With inputs from the gurus on this ml and from Sherlock, i have decided to make use of the Via-ITX board for the MP3 player on which i will connect a 64MB IDE Flash for the Shrinked Operating System and an LCD Display along with a Remote via the serial/Paralell connectors.
Have tried some contacts on lamington for the via-itx boards but can't get anywhere. Any links/nos/email addresses of pple who retail the via-itx eden/c3 boards?.
Please do pass them on if possible along with contacts for the LCD Display and the Remote Controls too is possible. Is there a site from where these can be ordered?.
Thanks, take care and a great weekend for all.
Trevor

A good choice. 1. For LCD, use standard module 16 x2 row or 16x4 row. You can find these on lamington road. There is a module for connecting these to paralell port. Ask me if you can not get. 2. Use a pen drive (128 Mb or so) for OS loading. Some time back I had come across a linux distribution, which runs from a pen drive. And it rocks! 3. ITX borad were distributed by esys . You can contact VIA dealer also. Warm Regards,

You must be joking. If a guru advised you to do that, you should question whether he is a real guru. You say you want to build an mp3 player right? The mini-ITX board is expensive and it would be a total absolute waste to use it as an mp3 player only. It would be much cheaper to buy a SqueezeBox which is already geared up as an mp3 player. http://www.slimdevices.com/ . All the features you could want is already there including LCD, remote. I think the price was around rs8000. And because you say you will only have 64MB flash, then what you are trying to build will still need a PC to host your mp3 collection. And that is of course the same as the SqueezeBox.
If you actual reason was because you wanted to learn how to build a Linux embedded system, maybe yes. But even then, you would be better off getting a real embedded board with a MIPS or ARM cpu like something from ncoretech, beta comptronics or a local vendor.
Good luck and let us all know how things turn out which ever way you decide to do things.

I have been looking for such a mips based board for a long time now and havent gotten anywhere. Most of the boards available cater to network apps and hence do not fit my bill. Besides x86 was the only viable option.
Years ago me has built thin client and other small time embedded systems on various x86 boards. This would erally be fun and a MIPS based board would indeed have been more compact-low in power consumption and easier to run.
Do pas on some suggestions for any such locally available boards you know of.

The slimdevices offering is indeed very cool and i would love to know whats the landing cost- Bombay. Any ideas???.

The board is designed for industrial application hence no sound, no flash, no IDE.
