Greetings HW enthusiasts,
The motherboard of one of my system is RIP. When I took out the CPU heatsink+fan, it came out with the CPU firmly stuck to the copper!.
I have tried to separate the CPU from the heat sink without much success. I am afraid if I try any solution it might damage the CPU.
Any suggestion to resolve this 'sticky' issue would be much appreciated.

That is the first thing I have tried. I have also tried chipping the dried gel with a blade. No joy.
I will try JTD's rubbing alcohol suggestion and hope it is a success.
I also contacted AMD tech. support regarding this dilemma and they were not very helpful. They asked me to open up an online RMA wherein the s/n p/n etc. is required -- all that stuff is on the plate that is glued to the heat sink! It took three tries before the chap understood my problem and then he said he can do nothing w/o s/n + p/n.
hi arun this wiki how may be useful.....

This is what I was planning to do. The videos will be helpful to execute the procedure!. The dental floss is a great idea, I had not thought about it.

absolutely not. This kind of potion leaves a sticky film when the alcohol has evaporated!

yup. It is also called rubbing alcohol. I was a bit hesitant to immerse the cpu in rubbing alcohol but I will follow the videos in your link.
Much thanks for the link.

An update ...

Thanks to many all with helpful suggestions. The common thread was to use Isopropyl alcohol.
The following link < http://www.wikihow.com/Remove-a-Processor-Fused-to-a-Heatsink%3E suggested the isopropyl alcohol + heat gun method.
I tried the heat gun method first with care it did not work.
Then I switched to the alcohol method. I kept the CPU + headsink submerged in "clinical spirit" (mostly isopropyl alcohol) for close to 16 hours. I was hoping this would loosen the paste using the dental floss method but no success! The paste had spread to all the edges + corner and I am not getting any gap to stick the floss in it.
On newegg.com, I read another user had similar problems with an AMD cpu.
