Had to ask all the gurus who use tally, can u import the data into another database. ie.mysql, sql, oracle, (I know i'm going to get abuses for next two) access, sql. If the answer is no have you ever thought what are we all going to do if tally tomorrow closes shop? Think about it.
As far as Tally 6.3 goes no i've not suceeded in doing this one even through wine. But I have seen a pirated version of tally 5.* work on wine, u will have to change the path in tally.ini file as to where the data is beeing stored (search the archives it's discussed before).
Tally claims that 7.2 has a linux version (with rpms for redhat) I've written to them for a demo (No luck).

wont close shop - reliance is running it and its a company minting money. No one is going to close it.

Are you really really sure? Note that what matters is profit, not revenue.

It is possible for you to export the data to dbf / excle / csv format. However, best of luck in trying to import that into another database. The problem is that the export is not of the database, but of the reports. So you will have huge number of heading, etc.
It is possible to work it out with enough efforts to work from their xml exports. A friend of mine who has his own accounting software has done with in order to import and export data from tally to his excise software. He successfully did it after months of efforts. At least till they change the xml tags in the next version ;-)

One is that tally is not likely to close so soon. Second, if they do close, people will just shut down their existing tally software at the end of the financial year and start the next year in a different accounting year. Keep tally on another pc for some time for answers to queries, etc.
