Hi, Is there anyway we can emulate internet explorer on linux? (any distro?)
While testing out sites (Especially when using CSS), it's a pain to see things display differently than intended in IE. Considering that most people use a combination of WinXP/98+IE combo, we cannot ignore this demographic and i dont want to use up a machine on windows just for testing.
I am sure this problem has been faced by others too, so any help would be highly appreciated.
thanks! abhi

WINE, CrossOver...?
But IE is not so stable as I know on Fedora core 3.

You can. In fact I do this for some sites which Irequire to use regualrly but dveloped only IE in view.
I run it using wine. Install latest wine package (on Debian it is as simple as apt-get install wine). go to frankscorner.org
Go to Internet-> Internet Explorer.
Follow the steps 1. install sidnet tools and configure wine (the script will do this for you) 2.Install dcom98 3. Install IE6
Warning! Wine even implemets bugs in windows!! IE6 is not developed by by wine.

all you guys are missing the point - he doesnt want to use ie, he wants to emulate its behaviour, so he needs a tool which will tell him 'your page would look like this in ie'

thanks KG. Yes thats what I want to do. For all those familiar with front end development using CSS for part thereof, you'll know what I mean. The combinations are endless. Low-res, high-res, firefox old version, firefox new version, firefox on Windows, on Linux, IE various versions. Throw in a Safari and an Opera and you have more permutations. Behavior can never be truly predicted.
while I try and use Konqueror to test for Safari, (not ideal as Safari manages better than konqueror), there is nothing to test on IE other than having a windows machine. Would like to avoid that given the past history of troubles with windows systems. Where I can avoid it, I would like to.

worst is the weird way ie calculates spacing. I mean 25%+75% should equal 100% - but it doesnt in ie

I remember seeing some website which does this kind of testing. You submit your page or url and it gives you screenshots of how it will look in different browsers. Long time back though, can't remember the url.

Yes, Browsercam or something. Paid service.which is OK, but its not practical when you are developing. too time consuming.

Installed wine and IE6. Still the behaviour is not 100% same as that of IE6 with WinXP.

It was long time back, I found varying behavior among different minor versions.
Verify.

I did. Got issues with mysql each time. But in any case, submitting a link everytime would not be practical for me. I needed something local. trying to put in all the updates and as someone suggested, getting the version exactly the same and then comparing.

Sorry. I was talking about the other one. danvine/iexplore
Also, as mentioned, this may not work for me as i need something local. put service pack 1, yet the display is not the same. now putting service pack2 to see if that comes closer.

I am using debian and have installed wine by using synaptic. I then downloaded and installed winetools but I can't run it by giving wt command. It says command not found though winetools has been installed. I even tried to install dcom98 but I got an error saying your version of dcom98 is newer. And when I try to install ie6, it starts downloading for 2 secs and then gives a error and stops. Can you'll tell me where my problems lie.

Install wine go to frankscorner.org browse to IE 6 follow instructions (install sidnet script, configure, install dcom98 with optons given by frank same with ie6) Enjoy IE 6.
You connect to net using proxy? Then select the advanced option after the error occurs and enter proxy there. -- "GNU is the system, and Linux is the kernel." A proud GNU user http://www.gnu.org Me scribbles at http://www.pravi.co.nr

I followed the instructions given at frankscornet to install dcom98 and was able to do so successfully. But, when I tr to install IE6 I get the following error "Setup was unable to download the required components. Please make sure you are connected to the internet or try to run setup again." I am not using any proxy.

And why would anyone want to make such a buggy IE-like browser? AFAIK, It ain't possible. Trust MS on the bugs, use wine or cross-over office and move on :)

there's some site that takes a snapshot of what your page looks like in various browsers and sends you jpgs of the same. I forget the name, but I think search for browser snapshot or something.

Cedega? Wine? Unlikely, though, as IE is just another shell that runs on top of Windows.

For my personal site, I don't bother. "This web site best viewed with anything but IE." At work we make an effort to make sure our sites display consistently or at least in a non-ugly way across platforms.
By the way, you're forgetting Safari onna Mac.

No i mentioned safari, but because getting a Mac just for testing is beyond the scope right now, i make do with konqueror. but like i said, that does not work too well. but yes, cant meet all the needs.. we have to draw the line somewhere.
off topic: whoa!! whats with ITV. they are playing that "right here right now" video from Bluff master continuously. not that i am complaining. :)

You cant "emulate" IE but you can install IE under linux. PCQuest had an article regarding it a few months back. It must be now freely available online. Try searching their website.

You may want to evaluate the user agent switcher extension with FireFox to fool the site into seeing IE. It may help you with certain sites.
