Hi all, i have a 20 GB HDD & have win2000 preinstalled on it with just one primary partition (C: drive). & the disk is filled upto 55% of its capacity, now i want to install Linux on it by making a another partition & installing 2 OS's over it which i have done many a times but as my current HDD has just 1 partition & is filled upto 10 GB i face a problem while installing RH 7.1
The error i am getting is --> boot partition >1024 cylinders.
.. well i created the partition using *fips* utility which partitions without loosing the data on the drive present currently but when tried to install it gave me the error above again & again & was unable to install linux(sorry GNU/linux) ;)
i guess this problem is becoz the boot partition or may be the primary partition shouldnt exceed 3 gb..
plz suggest me a solution ..i tried to find bootpartition software but i didnt get it on the net & also donno how to fiddle with it.
Thanx cheers~ </shahazad>
This issue arises because most PC BIOses directly support disks of only up to 8.4 GB size, thus requiring you to have all your bootable partitions within the 8.4 GB limitation. However, I believe newer versions of LILO work around this limitation. Look for the latest LILO documentation on the web, and see if this is correct. Maybe other list members can contribute their inputs too.

Krishnan

you can also solve this problem by creating a /boot partition of size of around 10MB and putting the kernel image there. /boot should be the first partion of you table.

But then he will have to blow away his exsiting Win2K partition and redo the install. That is why I did not suggest it initially.

Hi ,
wat you can do is get a latest lilo greater then 21.6 and rest all setting remains the same as in... the lilo.conf and ur linux partition above 1024 cylinders.... as in /dev/hda1 --> win (C:) /dev/hda6 --> Secondary win (D:) /dev/hda7 --> /boot /dev/hda8 --> Swap /dev/hda9 --> /
you might repleace your respective hda's to the ones with ur case.. keep the lilo.conf the same except the extra line if you need to add, unless its not been added for booting win label=win root=/dev/hda1 and one more thing is if you would like lilo in mbr you got to add this line in the start of the conf file boot=/dev/hda
and then save the conf and run lilo -L and your MBR is written with lilo :) best regards, -Mitul Limbani (mitul 2 mitul.com)

Sometime Today, shahazad@linuxplanet.nu assembled some asciibets to say:

Install your system as usual, but choose not to use lilo. Instead, create a boot disk. Then, boot from that disk, connect to the net, and download the latest version of lilo. Install this version, and then write lilo to your master boot record. It should work.

PartitionMagic's always there, but it costs a tonne. Bootit Next Generation is quite good. I've used it ever since partitioning with fips. It needs to be set up with DOS/Windows initially, but after that, use it thru a floppy, and the presence [or the lack] of DOS/Windows is overlooked.
