What do we plan to showcase? Any list of available hardware You would have to demarcate machines for specific purposes, since the target audiences will swiftly be ovewhelemed by the depth and variety of FOSS.

you tell me - it is *your* node, I am just here for the kick-off
Any list of available hardware
all new machines, i think with 512 RAM - will only know for sure tomorrow

thats why we need *you*
btw, why was a '*' added in the subject line?

Since, the lab has to be setup, it may lead to an Installfest. Isn't it?
Any list of available hardware
Osric, you can probably throw some light on the typical hardware that is used in that institute.

This would also help in setting up the internals of a FOSS-based Cyber Cafe.
Also, the list of tasks that may have to be carried out can be decided here (on the list) and a complete document on that would support the FOSS based Cyber Cafe idea too.

this lab is also meant to be a browsing centre for students - for which they want some doze machines (dual boot) too, it is up to us to show we can serve their needs with foss

yes

Umm. We may have to find out the browsing habits and identify if FOSS tools can serve their needs. AFAIK, it should be able to.

What about virtualising the setup? Could we run MSW in a vm? or the other way around?

Two problems: 1) I am out of station 2) I don't know much about how to setup a vm.
I usually run Linux inside a vm in windows.
Basically running one OS and seeing a different one in a window dazzles the newcomer and practically is a great convenience. Worth showcasing!

Did I misunderstand that? Is it too difficult/not possible to run doze like that using foss solutions? I haven't tried it out. That was only a suggestion.

i was not challenging you, or saying it is impossible. I was just inviting you to physically join in the discussion.

Waay too inefficient use of h/w. Dual boot is a better idea...
what is the exact timing? is any one coming from the town side so that I can join on the way? regards, Krishnakant.
And now, the bunty (Ubuntu) and bubbly (Kubuntu, default desktop wallpaper ;) ) make their way to VJTI computer Lab (or browsing lab) on 30 computer dual booting with Windows XP.
KG, has Prof. Jitendra Shah subsribed to this list?

If he isn't, he should subscribe. He was disappointed that the list members (especially we three) weren't aware of setting up the lab and didn't plan things before we dropped in.

we made a beginning here. basic install of a server and 30 desktops. No internet connection or dvd drive, so only a basic installation was possible. But we got the ball rolling. On behalf of NRC-FOSS i thank all the LUG members who turned up to help out.
The node is situated in the Mechanical Engineering department of VJTI. We hope to keep it open from 8 am to 9 pm on all days - but we need help for this. Mehul will be running the node as a field representative of NRC-FOSS, and will try to make it a state-of-art demo of the power of FOSS. This will take time and a lot of help from the community. People, please support him, on the list and on chat, and, more important, by dropping in and helping out personally. We have promised him that we wont flame him on the list regardless of what questions he asks ;-)
The facillities in the node are available free of cost for anyone who wants to develop software - if you have a good proposal, we will even pay you to sit there and develop software.
We need to showcase foss - so experts in various fields are requested to drop in and help out making it a kick-ass demo.
We had to make all machines dual-boot (except the server) as the management was not yet confident enough about the power of foss. We need to change this perception. Am tired - rest later

I can help with the installs. Setting up the system. Configuring them. Whatever ya need! :) I'll be free the week after this. But I can definitely dropin a couple of times this week. Just let me know the agenda for the day and I'll check if I can be of any use :)

The best thing to do is either email Mehul (find his email from the wiki) and ask him or call him up. The server isn't setup 100%, just the minimal and Mrugesh too, is helping out Mehul. At the end of the day, Mehul expressed that if someone could help him out tomorrow to complete his tasks on the server, it would be great.
What are you waiting for? Get going! ;)

there is no fixed agenda - just to install the necessary stuff for engineering students and browsers to use. So do drop in. If you have a laptop with a dvd drive, all the better, as we need a dvd drive temporarily to install stuff

I second jtd's view. for example we need to have one machine act as a server. we need few machines with just the basic desktops and office related applications. a few for programming related tasks and a couple for gimp, inkscape and related tools since they too are top class softwares. any other ideas? regards, Krishnakant.

it is not opening tomorrow - we are just inspecting the facilities and starting the work
