Hi, I have a 128kbps connection from Sify. You can download 150 MB in the day and night downloading is free (from 10:00pm to 8:00am). Sify wasn't a good connection till a month ago, but they seem to have improved their packages and support. You need a client to login, which is available for linux and mac too. Sify is the best I have in my area. (Malad)

Are you out of your mind? :O Sify is the worst "broadband" ISP around. Don't get caught up in their "web". I think Malad has exatt. Find out @ exatt.net They have some pretty plans ;)

You might want to go through these 20 pages. Many mumbaikars have posted their experiences.

Hi, I must elaborate on what I wrote earlier. (Sorry I was in a hurry then). No, I don't work for sify. ;) Sify, is a nasty ISP and people have really been frustrated with the connection. So have I. Google on "sify sucks". ;) But things seem to have changed now.
1) The connectivity: Once you login, you usually don't get disconnected, except at night. This happens about once a week on an average. Rest of the six days, I can download/upload all night without any problems. (this is just a rough estimate). As far as logging out is concerned, its bad. You can get messages like "session invalid" or something, so you wont really know whether you are disconnected or not. So if you are planning to go for an hourly connection, Sify is a big NO.
2) The Client: This is a piece of software, probably made by people who have learnt to "hello world" in some cow-shed computer institute. The linux client is the worst. It hardly gives any details, and most of the time it fails to login. So how do I live? I use the MacOS client. Its made in java, and is probably the best one of the lot. So if you can't run java in linux, say NO to sify. The windows client is pretty annoying, it forces you to install an antivirus, and you have to phone the support guys to get rid of the antivirus, if you don't want it.
3) The packages: Read the fine print before buying anything.
4) Customer Support: Really bad. They'll assume you use windows, and ask you to click on "Troubleshoot" which is not there in the linux client. So you'll have to manually ping the gateway and the sify server and tell them. They have a new phone number now, and you'll usually get thru the line in the 2nd or 3rd try, (as opposed to the 10th try, which was the case earlier)
So why do I use sify? Because I want unlimited downloads, and its the best thing I have in my area. So in conclusion I'd say that you could sify only if you need unlimited downloads, and you don't have any other ISP to satisfy your requirements. Sify is just and *option* you can choose from. Whether it is a good option or not, is relative to your other options. In the suburbs like Goregaon and Malad, I have found only two ISPs that give unlimited connections: Sify and Pacenet. However, there may be better services down south and in Chembur.
Hmm..this post is getting long. I should stop now :)

Avoid Pacenet like the plague. Linux support has to be enabled and its for packages with speed 64 kbps and above. Thats discrimination. Its reliability is also going down (maybe due to rains). I don't remember connecting for more than 6-7 hours and there's an outage almost daily.

Hi rohit...
Firstly, There is a simple workaround to make it work with any package on linux. i've been using their connection since before they even offered linux support. If you need help with that, feel free to contact me even. On the reliability front, i agrr, the rains have messed them up, But a few simple shell scripts can make sure wour downloads arent interrupted. Uptime for sure is definitely better than some of the others that my friends are using. Plus, a little tweaking gives be sustained 8 KBp/s on my 64kbps line. Also, they give you a public ip, and ping times are usually pretty good, low latency even. Do check it out to be sure, and dont dismiss it soo easily.

We should file a PIL against them. Remember what happened to M$ which integrates IE and WMP in Windows? May be the court will ask sify to pay up  BTW does sify block a lot of ports? what about p2p and stuff?

P2P works fine. However, for some strange reason, I am not able to ping their default gateway. I am able to surf fine. Perhaps they block ICMP. Its annoying during troubleshooting.

I use sify BB since 3 years. I dont guess I have faced as many problems as others in the last 3 years. Only for a 3 month period, when one switch was not working in my building, I have to call them every 2 days. They used to come to my building every 2nd day (within 1 day of the reporting the problem). Finally they changed the switch and its working very well now.
Satisfied user of Sify, using the MAC OS client of Satyam on SUSE. I live in Powai.

Hi guys, Sify...well, they were supposed to cut one day from my account if I downloaded more than 150 MB per day, and every extra 25MB downloaded. (excluding the night-free time). I realized that they dont mean "downloads", they mean "downloads+uploads". It makes a big difference when you download loads of anime using BitTorrent. :( Yesterday, my account was going to expire on the 13th of December, and today, I realized that I lost NINE days in one go!! Now it expires on 4th Dec. Geez this has been a really bad day. And I cant really challenge them in court, now can I? They've got better lawyers. And they may not be "legally wrong"... Gotto go now, got loads of homework :'(

when i was on sify dialup, they used to cut 10 minutes every time i connected, and their accounting was in slabs of 6 minutes. since i used to dialup about 50 times a day for maybe 40-50 secs a pop to check mail, you can calculate how my time melted away. - i bet they are doing the same thing in BB also

Use MTNL dialup(Rs.700 a month UL) or MTNL ADSL NU. It will save you a lot of money...

This list is available on the net too so we need to avoid giving someone's cell number without his/her explicit permission. Its a bad world out there. Maybe you already sought his consent. :)

And if you are on Hathway, ask them about their "freeway" plan. 995/- for 256k down/64k up, no download cap plans.
