Ok methinks it's time to Reply. I knew the meaning of Open Source... but then I prefer to think of it as follows If you "value" add on to the source and then charge a lil something, then it is quite ok.
But I don't think downloading the content of the 4 cds and then burning them onto CDs (I got a writer, so I don't wanna pay for this.), is VALUE-ADDITION.
So when someone (I don't care if it is Stallman) wants me to pay 5 times this, I am surely gonna ask him to take a hike..
If linus had started charging a fee for everything that he wrote, I don't think Linux would be half as popular as it is today.

I'd written this mail to the list in October 2000. I guess it's time I posted it again.

Sometime Today, Pillai, Gishu R (GE Energy) assembled some asciibets to say:

Stop top posting man!

And fix your line length. Lines should not be longer than 76 characters.

It isn't about what's okay and what's not okay, it's about what's legal and what's not. As far as the GPL goes for Free Software, it is perfectly legal to charge any arbitrary amount for Free Software, regardless of what charge you have procured it for. The only legal requirement is that you provide the source code for no EXTRA charge.

If you think you are not getting value-addition, don't buy. Is that so difficult to understand ?? You can charge any amount for free s/w as long as the source is avaialble. If you don't like one vendor go to another. It's all about freedom of choice. People who like it and need it, will pay for it.

you know what instead of shouting at ppl charging 250 you must fight with companies like redhat, suse / novell etc. these coz simply put ISOs from site into cds and sell it to you for much higher premium. by your interpretation they do very little value addition too.

But as far as I know, they charge not for the software, but for the service and support they provide. That is why no individual buys from Redhat / Suse. Only corporates do because they need the service

Also, you need to know that distributions do some tweaks and customizations to the software so that they work better together on the given platform. And this ease of use is the reason for some of the cost.
