Hi guys,
Does linux have support for telex machines/telex data. I have an old 8088 based telex machine (diskless) which receives input from the serial port (9 pin) which i would like to do away with and connect the telex line to my linux box. Any pointers in this regard will be appreciated.
We use this machine to send telegrams to remote areas as well as telex messages to our ships. Of course we do send emails to our ships through inmarsat, but would still like to retain the telex facility.
Noel.

If it does, I want to know how to send emails such that they are telexed to ships, and receive telexes. I guess I'd need a telex line in the first place?

Your line may be compatible, but you'll need to write a device driver for Linux if one isn't available already. Then you'll need to write applications, daemons, etc if they're not available.
Sometime Today, noel seq assembled some asciibets to say:

This is something that I would love to work on. I don't know if there is any software that does it yet, but basically, you'd need a telex driver to attach to your serial port. Shouldn't be too hard if one knew what kind of data needs to be sent/read. Can you find out what kind of data goes through the serial port for a telex?

You cant do that. The Telex line interface uses 90 v as carrier. The machine switches current through the circuit, which closes relays at the exchange which switches more current ubtil it reaches the destination where it will close solenoids whcich will cause printouts. U need an interface card. Optoisolation is essential as the spikes can get nasty.
