Depends on your platform. If you use windows then Access is a good choice. There is also mysql. if you are on linux or *nix then mysql or postgresql are good choices too.

you may be laying too much emphasis on Fast. if all you want to do is "manage a small chores of your work as soft copy" then even the slowest database would be fast enough for you.
