Dear Friends,
Yesterday I tried to install Red Hat Linux (RHL) 7.1 on my m/c. Everything goes fine abt detecting kbd & mouse. After that I start with system installer with the workstation mode for the installation. The next step was the Disk Partitioning.
Let me tell u 1st abt my disk partitioning. I have 20GB hdd with 4 partiton of approx 4GB with FAT32 (total 16GB) for windows & remaining 4GB is left free for Linux.
Drive Disk Space SetAS C 4GB pri dos D 4GB logical | In E 4GB logical | Extended DOS F 4GB logical |
& remaining 4GB is free for Linux.
I AM UNABLE TO INSTALL LINUX ON THIS FREE SPACE. I'm STUCK UP AT THIS PLACE.
Here the Auto partitioning failed (in workstation mode, other options r server, laptop & custom mode) giving the resion that, " There is not sufficient disk space in order to automatically partition your disk space. You will need to manually partition your disk for RHL to install." Giving 2 options for disk partioning 1st manually partition with Disk Druid & 2nd with fdisk (expert mode)
The Disk Druid shows the following chart -------------------------------------------------------------------- Partitions Mount Point Device Requested Actual Type <not set> hda1 3898M 3898M win95 FAT32 <not set> hda5 3859M 3859M win95 FAT32 <not set> hda6 3859M 3859M win95 FAT32 <not set> hda7 3961M 3961M win95 FAT32
Add Edit Delete Reset Make RAID device (BTW wht is RAID) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Drive Summery Device Geom [c/h/s] Total(M) Free(M) Used(M) used (%) hda [2481/255/63] 19461M 3883M 15578M 80 %
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If I try to mount the entire free disk space (3883MB) as linux native with mount point as / (root) then the system gives the message that, " There are currently unallocated partition(s) in the list of requested partitions. The unallocated partition(s) are as shown below, along with the reason they are not allocated.
/ Not enough free space "
...& the installation get aborted & I need to reboot the system.
How can I come out of this? & make the partition for root swap & home
2nd thing if I try to assign swap partition (let it b 1mb or 128 mb) from the free space of hda device the Disk Druid chart show Requested is 128MB & Actual is 2047MB & free space remains is only 1836MB. The same happend even if i assign swap of just 1MB. here only requested mem changes & other parameters remains same.
Why is this happening?
Thanks & Regards, SAMEER:))

P.S. Can anybody show me the actual installation of the RHL 7.1 with disk partitioning on his/her pc.
Sometime on Aug 2, Sameer Shinde assembled some asciibets to say:
Add Edit Delete Reset Make RAID device (BTW wht is RAID)
Drive Summery Device Geom [c/h/s] Total(M) Free(M) Used(M) used (%) hda [2481/255/63] 19461M 3883M 15578M 80 %

Set your root partition to 1MB, and select `grow to fill disk' or something like that. I don't remember.
Then, select your swap as exactly 128MB, do not select grow to fill disk.
This should work, but you won't be able to boot with lilo until you upgrade your lilo. Make sure you create a boot disk when you are prompted for it.

On Aug. 3rd, Philip S Tellis philip.tellis@iname.com suggested that :
Set your root partition to 1MB, and select `grow to fill disk' or something like that. I don't remember.
There is no option like 'grow to fill disk' If I try to set the root partition as 1MB or any other value, it gives the same error message as above i.e. There are currently unallocated.....
Then, select your swap as exactly 128MB, do not select grow to fill disk.
If I try to assign swap partition as 128MB from the free space of hda device the Disk Druid chart show Requested is 128MB & Actual is 2047MB & free space remains is only 1836MB. The same happend even if i assign swap of just 1MB. ( i.e. irrespective of the swap partition selected it assign 2047MB of disk space for the swap.) Why is this happening?
The ADD button in the Disk Druid gives the following options.
Mount Poing : Options [ /, /boot, /usr, /home, /var, /opt, /tmp, /usr/local ]
Size Megs : [ space to enter the size ]
[ ] use remaining space ( A check box option )
Partition Type : options [ Linux Swap, Linux Native, Linux RAID, DOS 16-bit < 32M, DOS 16-bit >= 32M ] Allowable Device : hda
Can you plz tell me which partition should b mounted 1st & which thereafter along with size. It does not allow me to mount any partition on the disk. If I try to mount any partition on the disk, it gives the error message with the reason eigther / Not enough free space ( althouge I have around 4GB for Linux ) OR / boot partition > 1024 cylinders.
the installation is aborted after that & the system halts.
It ( system ), once during the partitioning also told me that your Mount Point /usr should have 1227MB space. Does it require soo much space?
Do I need to assign my hda1 device [win95 FAT32] as root to get a dual bootable system. If so how much space shoud I assign to the root & do I need to reformat that drive (hda1) for root. ( I have windows installed on this partition.)
This should work, but you won't be able to boot with lilo until you upgrade your lilo.
I think RHL 7.1 has upgraded lilo, I'm not sure about that. If not where can I get upgraded lilo?
Make sure you create a boot disk when you are prompted for it.
ADDITIONAL INFO FROM RHL7.1 HELP MENU:
Workstation class installation will install the X Windows System & the disktop manager(s) of your choise. A workstation class installation removes any Linux-related partition on all installed hard dreves (& uses all free unpartitioned disk space). All non-Linux related partition will left untouched & you will be able to boot other installed OS in addition to RH Linux after installation.
In addition to installation methods (i.e. workstation, server, laptop & custom), RHL can also be installed "within" an already existing FAT (DOS/ Windows) partition. This "partitionless" installation method is selected once you label a DOS partition as / (root) during the Disk Druid partition screen. It overrides the auto partition detection used in workstation class installation.
NOTE: If u r performing "partitionless installation" u will need to define an existing DOS/Windows partition as root shown as /. Click on the FAT partition u want to select for this installation. Once it is highlighted, click Edit to assign it the mount point of / (root). Click OK when u r done. Once u have confirmed this choise, u will need to define the appropriate amount of root file system & swap space for your system.
This info I get from the OnLine Help during the installation. Hope this will help us to solve the problem.

but linux refuse to take any partition made with check box option once I tried to assign some space to /, /home, swap, /usr but it didn't worked.
Can you please tell me the size to b assign for each of these above mention mount points. I'm unable to format my disk. & I do not want to format hda1 device as it contains Windows on it. One more thing, where should I mount the root ?

There are only 4 options in the installer. They are, 1. Workstation 2. Server 3. Laptop & 4. Custom setup.
Out of these 4, only 1st one is possiable for me bcoz my machine is neighter server nor laptop & I can't do the custom setup as I'm new & don't know much abt linux. So only option left with me is the workstation.

You have windows. You want windows. Workstation will delete windows. Therefore, your only option is 4, whether you want it or not.
It's not hard. Basically, it asks you for what packages you want, and stuff like that. Just choose everything. You can remove extra packages later. It will also let you do manual partitioning, which is where you can set everything.

follow the following steps:
select the custom setup option --> when you r prompted to select the packages select everything -->
now to your partitioning problem :
before making the "/" root mount point make sure that ur windows partitions occupy atmost 6 GB of ur harddisk space. delete all other windows partitions.. u can make them again after the linux partitions are made. However do not forget to back up all important data before deleting the partitions.
now add - the "/" root mount point - with around 1000 MB space. then add - the swap partition - with 256MB space. at last add - the "/usr" mount point as linux native - with around 2500 MB space.
now you can split the remaining space into dos partitions of the size u prefer.
u won't have any more problems in the installation process.
bye & happy linuxing
