Hello Everyone,
Here are some news tips and updates for Debian and its alied distros.
During April 07, Ubuntu will come out with a multi-media centric distro called UbuntuStudio http://ubuntustudio.org/ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuStudio
There is also another media centric Ubuntu called Ubuntu Multimedia Center http://ubuntummc.com/
During that time the new Ubuntu versions 7.04 will be released too. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuWeeklyNewsletter/Issue28
Debian 4 which is still under 'Testing' and will be finally called Etch http://www.us.debian.org/releases/testing/ can be downloaded for trial using a small netinstall iso http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/ from http://www.us.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ The netinstall iso is the base system only. But saves download of heavy dvds for testing. There are CD isos too but I don't know which iso contains what packages.
I downloaded the netinstall iso which was 130 MB and used 'installgui' at boot prompt to use and study its GUI installer. Its really great and very good for non-experts to try out Debian. It works smoothly just like Fedora's Anaconda. Its kernel is 2.6.17. During installation, the Desktop option was selected during package selection and it download 540 MB of Gnome desktop. My 400 MB triband account is screaming and hysterical at the heavy downloads this month. :P Gnome in Etch RC1 is 2.15. In Ubuntu 6.10 it is 2.16. After install, the updates prompter in Etch states that kernel 2.6.18 image is available. So thats a plus point for Debian Etch.
Gnome in Etch is a bit buggy. Its printer tool allows you to select and choose printers but at the final 'Apply' button, the entire process vanishes into thin air. You are back to square 1. The best way to setup printers in _any_ linux distro is to ensure that CUPS is running and use a web browser and type localhost:631 in the address bar. 631 is the CUPS port for printing. If you have enabled network administration ( see docs on the CUPS website) you can access your printer from across different machines by typing Your_Printer_PC_IP_Address:631 If you are a command line fan or X is not loaded then use the lynx text browser to do the same in command line. 'lynx localhost:631' You can change printer settings too, like page size, resolution etc.
Another bug with gnome is that its automatic NetworkManager applet initially detects the connection established but after a reboot or two, it does not even detect the network device. All this while network is actually working and giving internet access.
But Gnome in etch packs in some more packages and utilities compared to Ubuntu 6.10. It has a separate CD burning utility ( cannot recall its name) just like K3B in KDE. The default in-built burning utility still exists.
The best option then would be to use both Gnome and KDE in Debian Etch and for that request someone who has its DVD to make a copy for you. ;)
Regards,
Rony.

For knowing what's on the ISOs, see this:
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/weekly-builds/i386/jigdo-cd/
You'll see many .jigdo files. Get them. Then, notice this:
[kumar@debian ~] file debian-testing-i386-CD-1.jigdo debian-testing-i386-CD-1.jigdo: gzip compressed data, from Unix, max compression
Bingo! All you do is zless <file>.jigdo, and you see the packages in the CD.
Also, a package based and web based search is availabe here:
http://www.debian.org/CD/jigdo-cd/

I faced the same problem when tried to install a WIndows Printer Share and it seemed to be caused by missing smbclient package. After installing that it was able to configure it correctly.
I doubt the problem may be because of missing necessary packages, but not showing any error message is not helpful at all.

It failed to get a printer working for me but hp-setup configured the printer correctly. If you have an HP printer you can install hplip and hpijs packages and then run hp-setup to automatically configure your printer (it detects the network printer automatically)
But one of my colleague had opposite result, he had a USB printer and hp-setup failed to configure it correctly but localhost:631 configured it correctly.
SO try both of these if you got an HP printer, local printer try cups first and network printer try hp-setup.
Your mileage may vary.

brasero (not recommended - it failed me before) and GNOME Baker (it has improved much), K3B rocks!!
Since my college days till now it has failed only twice, one while writing over a network (has done that so many times) and another because the drive was not working properly.
Cheers Praveen

My colleague and I bought a pack of 100 MosherBaer black and red printed CDRs and shared 50-50. However while burning 2 CDs in Gnome I had problems. In K3B on the lappy, it gave an error that 20x is not supported by the media or by the drive, so it automatically scaled down to 14 or 16x. However my colleague is able to record at full speed in 'the other' OS on his pc. What could be going wrong. I have a lot of experience with K3B. Are MosherBaers giving any trouble recently?
Regards,
Rony.

i've burned Knoppix and Ubuntu ISO images on MosherBaer CD's on my Laptop(running Dapper) via K3B at 24x and on my Desktop(running Sarge) also at 24x without any problems. i got a humble 10 pack though :-) no problems with the lot yet.

My laptop dvd combo (Quanta SBW-242b) was not reading. I found the plastic part with 3 tiny springs damaged and hence not centering the cd properly. Had to replace the drive, cause that part is not likely to be available.

Yikes!
On the same subject, for which CD/DVD drives does one get proper spare parts in Mumbai anyway? i know all of them come with the standard 1 year warantee within which they can and will be replaced, however its always good to know if spares are available.

The pc has a Samsung 24x writer while the Laptop has a 24x DVD combo. I usually go for 16x or 20x. Never full speed. I am not happy with Gnome's in-built burner. Anyway, I will burn some more CDs on KDE and Gnome to probe deeper.

Rony.
