Hi,
It seems that BSNL has launched an unlimited 256Kbps connection(http://bsnl.co.in/newsdetailed.php?news_id=296). The cost is 900 bucks a month and it includes a landline at zero rental. MTNL has also launched its version of unlimited 256Kbps connection at 1399 bucks a month. Unlimited connection mean no caps on data or time and an always on connection. Now why are the Mumbai subscribers being left behind? Hopefully they should be launching an unlimited scheme soon.
Anyway, the reason for this post is that I see many people using MTNL Triband connections. I was wondering if they could give me some heads up on the quality of Triband. I have heard that their upside is that they good speeds & uptime but their down side is pathetic customer care. Is that correct? On a 256K connection do you guys get constant 30-32KBps speeds or do they drop?
Is anyone using Airtel DSL? They have a similar scheme and are probably launching in our area in about a month or so. But I've seen that the general opinion about airtel is that they have good CC & availability but bad speeds. For me, availability, speeds matter a lot. CC comes later but I surely dont want to run to the Prabhadevi exchange everytime something goes wrong with my connection / router. I simply dont have the time or inclination to visit their exchanges.
What say you guys? Any good / bad experiences? Tips? Please let me know.

yes. the service is very good. i get speed 27-30 kbps consistant, it doesnt drop below 27. sometimes the service is down but for a minute or so, not more than that.
this is what i experienced with my triband connection.

Its nice. I get speeds of 26 Kbytes constant. But please buy your own 502T or else you will end up with a Chinese modem that has a silly interface. No logout button provided.

Did not find a 1399 plan @ http://mumbai.mtnl.net.in/triband/htm/tariff.htm maybe MTNL Delhi has it. If so, why not in Mumbai?

Let me take a guess - the powers that are @ MTNL Mumbai are like ostriches - hide their heads in the sand and ...

Beware of advertised speeds. The 256Kbps includes the bits of the link layer (ATM) over which the IP stack is initialized. This could be affected by the line quality and how far you are from the Tel. Exchg. At the ATM level I do get 256K/256K and file transfer rates of 25-27 KB/s.

Occasionally, you will face timeouts to sites (in my case Yahoo! pop/mail server) as well as DNS time outs from their DNS server (I run bind on my desktop). Regardless of what others say, _obey_ MTNL's advice of rebooting your modem @ 00:00 and 08:00 hours if you go with the NU plan. Otherwise, you could find yourself in a hole with "Additional usage" charges. Also, visit register.mtnl.net.in at end of month and print the "Account Summary" page which lists your DSL plan and the "Session History" for the month - useful to resolve any billing errors. One month, MTNL charged me @ the DSL499 plan (online showed NU!) and then charged me "additional usage" for the all the downloads (GBs) I had done during the NU hours! In case of billing errors, do not waste time with the local exchange or even the Broadband GM's office - write directly to the ED. Another thing, you will have to cough up the entire amount even if they are wrong o/w you will face their wrath and have the line disconnected. Technically, the service is as good as it can get but on customer service it sucks BIG time. Hope you do not run into billing snafus (you will be ignored) where customer service does matter.

Oops, typo on the DSL plan ----------------^^^^^^ it was DSL399 and _not_ DSL499.

I know we never get the advertised speeds but one should expect 90-95% of the advertised speeds i.e 230-240Kbps ( 28-30KBps ). This isn't unrealistic.

I dont intend to use any data transfer plan. I was curious about their service because if they are launching an unlimited plan then I would probably be interested in going in for their plans. As BSNL has launched their unlimited plan at 900 bucks a month means that within a few months MTNL _must_ reduce its cost to that level.

Thanks for this heads up. I am cautious about MTNL for this reason itself. I've had enough headaches when converting from prepaid to postpaid.
I guess I will wait for Airtel to start their service.

The thumb rule for realistic expectation is: you are doing well if you get advertised speed - 13% (link layer and IP overhead, line quality etc.) which comes to around 222Kbps. Anything over it is gravy.
-- Arun Khan (knura at yahoo dot com) You can make it illegal, but you can't make it unpopular.

So still you should get about 28KBps upwards.

Not necessarily. Read my earlier response on this thread. YMV depending on your line condition, distance from CO, where you have hooked the splitter etc. On proper splitter installation see earlier threads in this list.

When dealing with MTNL there are 2 important keywords to always remember and follow.
Shraddha and Saboori. Have faith in their technology and patience to bear their human interface. :-D

I am getting consistent speeds of 28-30 KB/S and the uptime is also good.
As far as CC is concerned they have improved it a lot but anyway if you want to get your work done
Then get hold of SDE Broadband's contact number at your local exchange, he will be of better help then CC guys.
What say you guys? Any good / bad experiences? Tips? Please let me know.
No bad experiences yet but I had once messed up with the D-Link 502T ADSL Router's firmware and MTNL replaced the router without any problems within a day.

So far download is always >220kbps. Of late ihav been getting speeds of 320 ~ 330 Kbps often - ya no jokes. Downloaded kubuntu and 400 MB of Kubuntu live in one night. That is 305Kbps!!. Hail MTNL god please let them do whatever they are doing right now. Dangerous part - no bill for 5 months, then one bill of Rs.6000/- including static ip, additional email ids, modem rentals etc. Quick check - not overcharged thank god.
So far they beat the shit out of all the isps. Wonder how the gsm and cdma services are.
but I surely dont want to run to the Prabhadevi exchange everytime something goes wrong with my connection / router.
Most of the time when your link fails power cycling the modem sets it right - nasty problem in unmanned installs (soft reset works sometimes butnot always. So ive built a relay connected to rts with all the unmanned installations.
I simply dont have the time or inclination to visit their exchanges.
That should be mandatory part of every engineers curriculum. Imagine passing out of engineering comletely uninitiated in the rituals and prayers to invoke the blessings of the telecom gods. U might even be invited to the server room if you can spew impressive tech jargon like the "mac is not ping the dhcp of the dns in the pxe rom"
What say you guys? Any good / bad experiences? Tips? Please let me know.
Use MTNL.
