Hello All,
I have been struggling to get my sample text on the wiki but still learning. The page is more than 8 Kb so rejected by the mailing list admin. I have finally managed to put it on to google home pages and here is the link below:
http://ronybill.googlepages.com/home
Please go through it and give feedback. The brochure is meant to introduce people with no knowledge of linux, to linux. So it doesn't have to be detailed but give an overall picture about it.

I'll include your google page as a Beginner's Brochure. Let the detailed brochure too continue. (Would be completed by the time this email reaches you)
I have added the article to the wiki. Login, and click on that page (Linux Brochure Quick Guide). Click on the edit button at top.
A few quick tips
1. "==" is for a Level Two Headline - simply put a title with big font and bold face.
2. To categorize, add additonal "=" sign.
3. Use three "<singlequote>" -> ''' to boldface a sentence/word. i.e. '''this is all bold'''
4. Use two "<singlequote>" -> ''' to italicize a sentence/word. i.e. ''this is all italics''
5. For external links, [http://www.kernel.org LINK TEXT]
The LINK TEXT will be displayed linking to kernel.org

Thanks to the efforts of Roshan who did the wiki, my text is up on the wiki at
http://db.glug-bom.org/wiki/index.php/Linux_Brochure_Quick_Guide
The intention is to create a small folded colour brochure that can be handed out to people unaware of Linux. This is necessary as giving them a CD may be too early and they may simply put it aside, a waste of media, effort and money.

Rony.

<quote> GNU/Linux is an operating system that looks and feels just like the Windows(R) desktop and this allows you to migrate very easily to this new system. </quote>
This is calling for questions like
"Why does it not do this and this in such and such way? Windows does it that way!"
Linux is NOT Windows. This, the user needs to know very very clearly.

The author specifies, "that looks and feels just like the Windows(R) desktop" (contd...below)
Linux is NOT Windows. This, the user needs to know very very clearly.
Yes, and therefore, he should also specify "Linux != Windows". (May be I'll add this to the wiki.

Thats why I mentioned 'just like the Windows(R) desktop' ->desktop, not Windows alone. :)

Sometime on Dec 27, Mrugesh Karnik assembled some asciibets to say:

Well, if you don't agree with something on the page, go ahead and change it. That's why it's a wiki, and that's why everyone has access to it.
If something is a bit controversial and you're not sure whether you should change it or not, then add it to the article's discussion page, and others can talk about it.
That's the way to grow this project. Everyone contributes a little.

Great job! I'd like to suggest one thing; there's probably a bit too much of text (not discounting the screenshots) -- a bit like droning about a certain thing. A brochure should give out all this information with as little text and as much visual cue as possible; sort of like an ad where most information is visual.
Modern college brochures are an example where pictures of labs and facilities take more focus than the actual text. Factual data also will play a great role (like security related data, some quotes from major companies, personalities, etc.).
Lastly, give them access to Linux at the end of the brochure (in fact all throughout the brochure). Links to major distributions would make this complete.
I'll also try to pitch in with some stuff this weekend if you'd like it.
Marginally relevant comment: There was an ad by IBM a few years back saying "The future is Linux". That was quite cool :)

Hello All,
I have edited the brochure text at http://db.glug-bom.org/wiki/index.php/Linux_Brochure_Quick_Guide
Please go through it to add extra information of useful links at the bottom ( if necessary ) but don't add to many advanced links. Once the text is finalised, I will capture the screen shots. However after all the on-line work is done, how do we go about the DTP part required to make actual colour copies in a folded paper format, just like the fast food home delivery take away menus with 3 to 4 folds. What paper type, what printing technology?

Suggestion:
Paper - The one that ICICI bank credit card holders get with their statement. A pamphlet advertising loans, (House, Car etc). A sort of glossy touch. I'm not aware of the cost though. Sometime back, I bought _*a*_ A4 size of similar quality worth Rs. 5/-
Use Scribus to create it ;) (Knoppix LIVE CD 3.9 or later)
Color or B/W?
