Hi
This is just for info. There is a problem with kernel s 2.6.8+ and k3b where it cannot detect most writers properly and hence shows up as a normal drive instead of a writer under k3b. This is a kernel issue as claimed by the k3b team.
solution: kernel 2.6.7 or lower (i personally have shifted to 2.4.27 b/c i find 2.6.8 & .10 rather unstable with my snd-card & ide times out too often ) or do not use k3b.
so before giving up on ur writer, please try one of the above. It might not be a writer problem. It is still not clear how many writers (or if all) are affected, but it seems to be fairly wide spread.
BTW: anybody using kernel 2.6.8+ with k3b ?? which writer / kernel

I had a similar problem. K3B detected my writer but made the system very unstable when trying to write Audio CD's. Writing regular data cd's was not a problem. I had mailed the K3B team with the problem & system details and promptly got a relpy saying that the kernel version I'm using was buggy and to upgrade/downgrade.

I was using kernel 2.6.8 for FC2 on a Sony Writer when this problem came to my knowledge. Currently I'm using the 2.6.5 and am facing no problems writing CD's. Haven't tried Audio CD's as yet.

Hey Erle, Yes I'm using a 2.6.8+ kernel with k3b, both on FC3 and Debian sarge with an LG 52x CD writer. And, I haven't had any issues as yet *touchwood*. Have burnt a few CDs and they seem to work perfectly, even a few .iso images.
Cheers. Abhijeet
P.S.: This is my first attempt at bottom posting, I hope that is what is to be done to reply to the thread. :/

Interleaved posting is better. Meaning, instead of putting your reply right at the bottom of the message, you put it at the exact line that you are replying to, and delete all other parts of the message. That helps to keep the message size small.

apparently the issue does not seem to be affecting the LG' all that much... you are the second person to confirm the same.

yes.. but also try to follow what i have done.. above.. keep snippets of the conversation and reply. makes reading a lot easier for everyone and msg. size a lot smaller.
....
as of version 0.11.18+ the k3b team says the issue is better... ( details on the site.. see my earlier email) 0.11.20 is now out.. plan to try it out with 2.6.10... ..lets c..

If it's a kernel problem then other burning software also shud not be able to detect writers. In fedora core 3 none of them detected my LG cd writer. On googling I found that u have to place a cd in the writer for it to get detected (atleast for my LG )

Not true In fact my writer (acer) .. (though the issue shows up on a sony, lite-on as well. in fact it will show up with _all_ standard writers) shows up and works well on the command line and every other software ( ncuses based, gtoaster, even the kde "arson".
the way k3b detects cd writers is different from any other software (as far as the common ones go)
snippet from: http://k3b.plainblack.com/index.pl/news2
"A patch that was introduced into the kernel shortly before the 2.6.8 release makes K3b and also the dvd+rw-tools unusable on Linux (unless run as root but that is not recommended). The very important GET CONFIGURATION MMC command is rejected by the kernel for reasons I cannot see and writing commands like MODE SELECT also fail (K3b cannot detect CD writers without it) even when the device is opened O_RDWR. Until this issue has been solved I strongly recommend to stick to kernel version 2.6.7."
If you are indeed able to get k3b to detect your cd writer (and are using 2.6.8+) , perhaps you could consider writing in to the k3b team because they (and others) are all struggling to work around the issue, maybe the Lg is showing different some how... but it doesnt make sense as to why it should. maybe you are one of the lucky ones :-)
though.... I think your issue is related to the patched cdrecord version released with FC3, for which a fix is now available and not directly related to the problem stated above
