why do hardware vendors recommend customers to go for windows rather than linux? Most common reason is that they know nothing about linux, or are not confident of supporting linux. No one wants to admit lack of knowledge - so they recommend against it. Not evil minds - just ignorance. Check it out here:

Talking about ignorance of hardware vendors, I have seen an office where a
reputed pc brand has supplied a big lot of machines preloaded with Red Hat and was surprised to see all of them running desktops as root. The machines are more than a year old and the staff is clueless on how to use them.
