No. It's not like that. Some winmodem do work on a Linux Box. Just check whether your modem can be install on linux or not. Actually that is the only resion that I changed from Caldera to RedHat bcoz my modem works on RHL 7.1 with kernel 2.4.x or higher.

No special settings. just download the rpm file for your modem ( check your modem vender site for that in my case it was motorola.com or just google for the drivers ) & install it on linux.
After that give the command "kppp" & give the setup for your isp. It is that simple.

Winmodems work fine on any GNU/Linux box. And the kernel requirement of 2.4.x is applicable only (?) for the Motorola drivers. I've used my winmodem using the Lucent Technologies' ltmodem on a Slackware box running 2.2.16. And the throughput was generally far better than what I got from it in Windows. Don't know about the 'special settings' for the Motorola sm56, but ltmodem required kernel-headers to be installed and loadable module support enabled.

Change the permissions of /dev/modem [or your appropriate modem device] to world read.

There are no special setting for this modem. Just download rpm, install it, & type sm56setup. That's all. You r thru. Now type kppp or invoke internet dialer & give setup for isp.

It depends on how old your modem & its drivers are. The drivers for motorola sm56 pci modem are released hardly 3 or 4 month back. & they (Motorola ) tested it on RHL 7.1 with kernel 2.4.x so the kernel requirment. It is not necessary that you should have updated kernel to work with winmodems.
Thanks & Regards, SAMEER : ))
