I'll suggest these master pieces.....I have been coding Perl for around 2 years now and implementing IPtables for arnd 4 months....so if you think my expereince is reliable then yes my suggestions would be worthwhile...
Perl : To start with Learn Perl in 21 days from SAMS publication.
Once you are thru with the phase of initial coding jerks you can opt for the best Programming Perl by Larry Wall --Oreill'y
Iptables : Well theres a book Linux Server Hacks from Oreilly

As far as David Coulson's article is concerned no doubt its quite useful but def the above link has much more choices......
So enjoy Perl and Iptables and do let the group know if they were really useful....
