No. RFID. Infact that is what u should be looking at longterm.

Barcode readers have serial (usb) interfaces. Should be trivial to read.There is already an app to write barcodes - kbarcode. And linbar to read. Freesoftware coders have already done 90% of the work for almost everything. It's the last mile and the business plan that u have to provide :-). Should u need any help on the hardware i will help.
