Hi
I got to know that there are non-free applications bundled along with Knoppix CD. Does anyone know if there is a variant of Knoppix? I figured it would be easier to just download and use / distribute that instead of removing the non-free packages from the Knoppix CD and creating one myself.
Apparently RMS told me a few days back that the 'vrms' tool does not guarantee the results to be 100% true since it purely depends on the deb package maintainer.

Ever check out the "non-free" and "contrib" trees in the Debian pool?

Hi,
I don't know if this is the right forum for this posting, but anyways.
We are a small business outfit located in Mumbai with a setup of 25 computers. We are currently networked using Netware 3.12 and wish to set up a Linux based server to replace it so that we can get email as well as internet access streamlined. We recently went in for a dishnet DSL connection and ever since that we have been facing a virus problem with all the computers in our office.
We are looking for someone who can setup a server for us that downloads our emails from the various sources and allows people in our office to send emails trhough this server. This way we do not need to give internet access to everyone. Also, we need to allow a few people to access the internet. So we should be able to control this. If you can set up a virus scanning and spam removal software on the server too, that would be great.
The kind of expenses we are looking at is really small. Basically to the tune of Rs. 1500 per month or so. In this, the person should set up the server for us and if something goes wrong in the future, come to our office and fix it.
Please contact me on my personal email if anyone on this list can help me. If you have friends, etc who can do this, please ask them to contact me.

to find out which packages, do the following
apt-get update apt-get install vrms
then type 'vrms'
You'll get the list.
BTW.. you will have a good laugh reading the man page for vrms. vrms stands for Virtual RMS ;-)

Debian is totally free, is inaccurate statement. Debian is as free as you want it to be. There is offcourse non-free package tree and several key packages are part of it. In case of debian comparing it to other distros, there is a critical eye for licensing issues.
Knoppix has java for staters, which by RMS, VRMS, would be considered non-free Knoppix is less strict on the LICENSING issue than debian is.
RedHat has always been sitting on the fence in context of freedom as far as the RedHat linux (free version) is considered.
