Do you want an internet service provider or simply expand the range of an existing available internet connection?
If the ISP can provide a good internet connection at an affordable price,
that would be the best option. Right now Reliance is offering 2Mbps speed non shared bandwidth wimax connection in 6 weeks time after giving an advance of Rs 70,000 plus which is way too much money and too much money locked up. There is no other service provider yet in the area and therefore the quality of service is also questionable. Don't want to sink in so much money and then find out that better and cheaper alternatives could have been available. Reliance is offering the 2Mbps connection at around Rs 20000 per month and want to have 3 months advance too plus make us wait 6 weeks to give the connection.

Have you tried tikona

Tikona is not providing services in the state of jharkhand /bihar as of now and being a new service provider, don't really have any feedback from customers/market information.

I triedBSNL EVDO or 3g at Chandigarh proper in 2008 or 2009 and was unhappy with the quality of service provided --speeds were too low and unreliable. The location does not have BSNL landline as it is in the interiors. It may open up sometime later and we hope that happens sooner than later.

We don't have BSNL in the area. No mobile towers also.

How does the school staff normally communicate, other than letters? How will you use any mesh unless you have internet access? You will only get a LAN.
Regards,
Rony.
In that case, "Do it Yourself" WiFi or expensive WiMax are the only options.
WiFi should work, but would be finicky (specially in rains) unless you amplify the signal to 2 watts.
Regarding WiMax, you cna look up distributors for Huawei in India ( http://www.huawei.com/ap/en/catalog.do?id=301)

One will not be able to buy Wi-Max equipment in India for link setup. It requires WPC license to import any radio (yes, even WiFi). Esp. in the areas mentioned, it might be a recipe for disaster to think on these lines without getting the papers right.
