For modem, be on the prowl around the dealers who get a lot of old systems under buyback offers and they may have working external modems to sell.
My beef with external modems is the power supply being outside the box. Somehow I am always 1 plug point short no matter how many I have. Maybe it could be added to Mishra's laws. (Or was it murphy's).

One main advatage with external modems is that if you notice heavy traffic even in idle mode, you can immediately shut it down and break the connection even if your 'disconnect' option hangs up.

Couldn't the phone line be removed in such situations in case of internal modems?
