Use the L3 string for your modem.

Since we are on the topic of modems ..... I also use Mandrake 8.2. My modem works fine, but is there any way of making the modem play the line sound when it dials and connects ? Meaning, while it is dialing and connecting, I would like to hear the sound from the modem to know if it is getting the line, dialing, whether line is busy or waiting to connect, etc.

I could not find the relavent option in the control panel

Packet filtering alongwith other measures should work. IPchains is good try it out. Also use tools like dsniff and nmap to check the security of the network.Shutdown services which are not needed. And block all ports which are not in use.

...and follow the paranoid approach to security. ``Deny all, allow selectively.'' You should be enough secure that way... :)

Use fdisk and make necessary partitions, except a seperate partition for /boot. For booting problems for partitions beyond 1024 cylinder, you should use loadlin.

This shouldn't be a problem with the newer versions of LILO (or Grub). You just need to add "lba32" to /etc/lilo.conf

Unfortulately if you use disk druid during RHL installation it still complains if you use a boot partition > 1024
