Hello All,
Yesterday at Lamington Road I came across small sized and low cost Asus and HCL laptops using older processors. I liked the looks of the Asus one as it was white in colour and resembled an Apple so I requested the shop assistant to put it on. It was an Intel one with 3 usb ports, one external VGA port, 7 inch screen, LAN, modem ports, Wireless LAN, camera. It had no CD drive, no HDD, only a 4 GB flash drive. It was preloaded with Google OS (which is based on Ubuntu). It booted fast into the desktop and had a proper GNU/Linux OS with Firefox, thunderbird, OO etc with Skype and Google applications too. It fits into a medium sized ladies hand bag and is easy to carry around.
Cost is between 16.5K to 17.5K.
This tiny tot is a good option for those intending to buy a PDA phone but have a low budget and even those who want more out of their PDAs. It is a full fledged operating system so attaching compatible peripherals like pen drives, printers, scanners, bluetooth adapters, USB modems etc would be very easy through the USB port. You can choose whatever software you want to install. The external VGA port can make this device handy for making presentations on a projector.
This is just my personal opinion and I am not representing any of the vendors selling it.

The Asus model you're talking about is the Asus EEE PC. And it comes installed with Xandros and not gOS. Asus has a new model due sometime in May, I believe, which will have a 9" screen, instead of the 7" screen which the current model has. The resolution remains the same which is sad, but its still a great machine. If only they increase the resolution a bit, I'll snag it asap.

I found this link and the desktop shown in the guide is the same one I saw.

I guess the two mini-laptops you are talking about are [1] and [2]. To me it seems a good deal for someone who needs a cheap, ultralight laptop, maybe for presentations or as a travel companion---lower hit if it gets stolen / lost :-)
I wonder how sturdy these would be with regular use.

It seems Sahara has also just released an 8 inch Sub-notebook retailing at about 15k, and runs "some Linux distribution" as can be seen at http://priceguru.in/archives/mobility/1606
There are links to a HCL Mileap and ACI UMPC in the same article as well.

I purchased this Asus EEEPC two months back from Croma, Vashi (17K) . This
laptop rocks. No issues till now. I just wish they had given a shell. I am trying to install Ubuntu on a USB pen drive and then use it on the laptop. The best thing I found is 3 USB ports and a VGA Output at higher resolution for projection.

For a shell,
Work --> File Manager --> Tools --> Console.
or
Home-t
or ctrl-alt-t
install kicker and ksmserver, reboot and you have the option of using the full desktop mode.
There is a huge user community already out there.

HeHe! I tried their main number but it is 'out of service'. Their fax number is only ringing. Then I looked up their dealers. Only the one in Marine Lines picked up the phone and told me that their sales people were in a meeting so they will call back. Took my number and I have yet to receive their call.
For the price of 15K with 40 GB HDD, 1 GHz. processor, 512 RAM it is a very god buy, if its available. :-D All these 7" lappys are small in size and weigh only a kilo so that makes it easy to carry around. Has anyone checked them out in Croma?

One of my collegues went to Croma and saw the EEPC. His recommendation is that we should not buy it. Apparently, you can not load any software other than the one already installed. Also, 4GB of disk space, in today's environment is significantly cramped. Also, he said that HCL's offering in the same range was significantly better.

Actually the HCL model is the same as the eeepc and I like the build quality of the eee much better. HCL has another model with a 40g HDD instead of a flash drive but that retails for around 30k, afaik.
You can install more software on top of the eee but the point is that this is not the primary use of the eee. This is a low cost solution for a very specific purpose. Light word processing/presentation , emailing and browsing and all software required for these functions is already installed. If your needs are more than that, you'd be much better of with a full fledged notebook. Personally, I'd buy one as soon as they come out with a model with a better resolution.

There is an 8 GB version too but dealers don't have it in stock.

Hello All,
This is to confirm the workshop meet on Sunday 13th April 2008 at 1030 Hrs. for the Asus EEEPc at HBCSE in Mankhurd. Those coming for the first time can find it located adjacent to the Anushaktinagar Bus Depot on your left if you are facing it. There is a USB optical drive available in HBCSE, we only need the eeePc which Devranjan will be bringing. I will bring my cd/dvd collection. however I have Kubuntu 7.10 so if anyone has Ubuntu 7.10 please bring it along. We will also see the live session with Sabayon Linux if the eeepc version dvd is available.
This meet is open to anyone interested, newbies, oldies, techies, non-techies, so please don't ask if you can come, just come. This will be a great chance to see the Asus eeepc in action.

The Sabayon 3.5-r2 DVD that I have has an option for installing on EEEPc. There's no separate DVD.

I am just guessing, G for ground floor. For new comers, it is on your right side once you enter the building.

Said Asus is also implicated by many in trying to throttle the XO with the EEEpc.

You can do tons of stuff with the eeepc. People have got ubuntu to run on it. It basically comes w/ Xandros but you can enable full desktop mode. There is a built in SD card reader. Pop in a 8 GB card enable unionfs and you are set to install new software to your heart's content. See my other post.
Besides here are 3 usb ports. My only grouse is no bluetooth and no modem.
