My Trusty Dell Latitude D820 works perfect since Ubuntu 8.04. I don't meddle with a lot of compiling or change a lot of system settings though. The only issue was multi-monitor setup. (Had no internet and needed to connect to a projector. No go)
And the Tata Indicom has its own mind on when to work, though this has nothing to do with Dell, and I know there's a script / fix for the Tata Photon around.
