hello guys
We have an ieee tech workshop in my college in
October. I want to do a Linux workshop. While one of
the things it would include is Linux installation,
that is a little bit commonplace, i need your
suggestions for
1) How to make the workshop interesting for newbies
(Most wouldnt know any thing about Linux)
2) Which are the places where Linux can outdo Windows,
more precisely how do i answer the question
"Why is Linux better than Windows for me ?" when
asked by an average joe who probably can get a pirated
Windows CD as easily as a free Linux CD and who
probably doesnt care about 99.99% uptime except that
he doesnt like the frequent crashes on his windows
machine.
theres still time for the worskshop, its in october so
do drop in suggestions even if they strike u after a
few days.

i guess i can share some experience....
1) You do not need to reboot frequently.....
2) While using Xwindow you get 4 Desktops whereas in windows you get only
one.
3) Free Support from mailing lists.
4) You get to know more about your hardware....
5) Better Internet Connectivity....
6) Better Hardware Detection with Redhat 7.1 (my experience)
7) Better Sound Quality if the Sound Card is supported.

like 4-5 times a day.

I am not quite interested in knowing more about my
hardware. I have better things to do. Really.

Oh no, I am fine. My vendor does all the
installation for me, so I don't have to bother with
things like "hardware detection".

supported.
I hope my sound card is supported by Linux. If it's
not, I'm not even touching Linux.

Speed - Programs on Linux seem to run faster than their Windows
counterparts.
Stability - Your computer won't "crash" on you just when you're
almost done typing that important document. [Win2k is stable.]
Variety - You can choose from several of the Linux's,
Linux-based web browsers, email clients, word processors, etc.
On Windows, you don't have as much choice, hence you're stuck
with IE, OE, Word, etc.
Community - Linux has a small but friendly user community that
will be ready to help you out with your needs. Can't say that
about Windows.
Price - Linux is almost free-of-cost. It's better than your
usual pirated copy of Windows.
Also, you can show aj a demo of KDE 2 or Ximian GNOME. That
should be enough to lure anyone, my guess.
DON'T tell aj about the command line, pipes, fifos, POSIX
compliance, the UNIX philosophy, mail/news/web servers, etc.
You'll scare him away.

Add this too. It is better than having the cops bust into your house
one day to confiscate your computer because you use pirated software.
You never know if someone who doesn't like you will make a complaint
