u haven't mentionaed the make of the motherbord. there is a option in BIOS for some motherboard or there is a jumper on the motherboard itself. just look for it in ur motherboards manual
**one more thing is that PnP option in plug n play support section in the BIOS must be "no" for linux to detect the sound card properly**

A bit of a problem with sound on my work i810 motherboard.
I use 32-ohm AKG headphones and the onboard AC97 sound doesn't have the grunt to drive them. I've put in a PCI YMF724 card, which shows up in /proc/pci but without an IRQ mentioned. The kernel module won't load.
What am I missing? Do I need to disable the AC97 first? If so, how?

Figured it out, thanks. There was a BIOS option to disable onboard sound.
