Lets reach on consensus , and we hold the 8 th august meet at Onward Novell. let our luggers learn more on Novell. I totally disagree with Sir. Nagarjuna with all my respect for him, abt Redhat distributing CDs and other media, after all its a part of an exchange, and exchange between the Industry and our community, what use would this community would be of if we keep our selfs Isolated from the Industry. Our vision says knowledge sharing, which includes knowledge sharing with the Academicians, Industry, GNU users, Developers, and all of them whom we can think of. If Redhat can attract few more users by distributing freebies whats the hitch. let fools come to collect freebies, and the wise come to collect knowledge.
About every months meetings my point of view would be:- 1. every alternate month lets keep our meeting in some of the leading academic colleges, so that more awareness can instilled among students, for they are the ones who shall carry this GNU movement further. (Remember catch them Young) 2. the alternative month venue could be any where, would be a good idea if its with the industry, and major open source players like novell and redhat. (So Novell India meet on 8th is an excellent Idea). for which some of us should really take initiative and help in organizing at various but different venues.
So fellow LUGers lets make it at 8th Aug. at Onward Novell, andheri MIDC.
Regards Yayati.

well the `:-)' saved you, otherwise your attempt was diplorable.
GLUG Mumbai, to remind every one, existed even before RedHat India was setup. RH and other companies are welcome to ask their employees to attend the meet and become part of free software community than send a carton full of CDs. The function of the meeting is social and for exchange, sharing and not to rcv freebies.

Nothing wrong in distributing cds. But U need to distribute cds in places other than a lug meet, Like say Nasscom meets, or IEEE meets. U could use guerilla tactics and distribute em outside a Microsoft meets. But i suppose that would be down market tactics. So u can use more market savvy techniques like meets which u organise (they call em Seminars). Wonder why we never hear about such plans from RH, Suse etc.

I completely disagree on this issue. The term Opensource contaminates and sidelines the central issue which is freedom to share and not to be controlled by vested interests. All commercial organisations have been irresponsible at various points of time and have worked against the best interests of end users in pursuit of their short term goals. Redhat has done so (albeit a lot less painfully than others) in the past (was it gcc3.0-which-wasnt-gcc3.0). Maintaining a healthy distance from commercial entities (incidentally I too run a commercial entity) is very important. The recent fiaSCO is a case in point. And since u bring it up we must avoid meeting at commercial organisations premises. Neutral venues like HBCSE, MET, IITB, VJTI are welcome.

I also wonder why they dont distribute Deiban CD's (if they have so many blank cd's available). After all we belong to the same family. I would rather have the latest Debian CD's than FC2. So they should distribute both, shouldnt they ? Is'nt it about choice ?
:-P

That is a definite nono. Everbody would then know that RH is not GNU/ Linux. And they would know the difference between commercial and voluntary and opensource and free and ......a whole can of knowledge.

eh? I think we should meet at HBCSE.
let our luggers learn more on Novell.
what has Novell got to do with the free software movement or the open source one ?

Spoon feeding is always a bad idea. Folks who will be the future proponents of any movement do not generally need spoon feeding. Conversely spoon fed babies do not generally have enough motivation to carry forward any movement.

I think we should keep the commercials away and keep away from the commercials. Let the atmosphere be as bohemian and utopian as possible, which can only happen at an academic institute. The purpose of these meets is learning and sharing and not commerce I hope. The commercial folks can come down to our level if they need to interact with us ;)
