Hi friends,
How can I change the screen resolution in RHL7.1 I checked the control panel but I didn't found any tool to change the screen resoultion. Because of the improper resolution my screen looks something like this (__) [ovel shaped ]

vi /etc/X11/XF86Config or XF86Config.4 (not sure which one you use).
Scroll down to the Screen section for the driver that you use. You will find Display subsections there. Just change the order of the modes in there. If you want to set a default colour depth, then before the first Subsection line, add DefaultColorDepth 16

It is XF86Config file. I found it.

The problem is solved but not totally. I'm succesful to change the screen resolution, but still the the screen looks like oval shaped [ something like this (__) ] & not rectangle. I tried all the possiable resolutions with the screen but it didn't worked out. Now I think I should try to change the screen refresh rate. There is no way I found to change it. Can you please tell me how to change the screen refresh rate?
Here are some containts from XF86Config file you may need. -------------------------------------------------------------- # The svga server Section "screen" Driver "svga" Device "sis6326" Monitor "SAMd556" DefaultColorDepth 16 ( I also tried 24 )
Subsection "Display" Depth 24 Mode "800x600" ( I also tried 600x480 & 1024x768 ) ViewPort 0 0 ( What is this ViewPort ?) EndSubsection EndSection ----------------------------------------------------------------
There is no row to define refresh rate.
Thanks & Regards, SAMEER :))

This is a hardware problem. Check the controls on your monitor. I don't know what it is called, but you'll see a control that looks like this: )__( (opposite of what you have). You have to adjust that.

Also, maybe check around for some strong magnetic source which may be having an effect. Sometimes changing the orientation of the monitor also helps (- something to do with the earth's magnetic field), thought most modern monitors should not affected by it.

!!! I don't remember any monitor of mine having problems with the earth's magnetic field, and I've been using computer monitors since back in 1987. Before that I used televisions, and none of those had problems either.
My phone's magnetic field though is a different matter. It tends to change the colour/tint of the monitor in the shape of the field. I've noticed this with different phones and different monitors (including Sony).

There is no such magnetic field source around it. My machine is in my study room with my books, where PC is the only electric device ( except Tubelight & fan ). I don't think, tubelight & fan can cause electro-magnetic interference.

Sure they can.

This is not a hardware problem because with the same settings my windows works properly. ( Does it mean, I should always change my monitor screen setting every time when I switch between Windows & Linux. This can not be the option. There must be something else.)
I also had this problem previously, when I installed caldera eDesktop on my system. But it gives me various options to check the screen resolutions with *different refresh rate* during the installatin. Also it has a screen resulation settings in the control box from which I selected the proper settings. But there is nothing like this in RHL 7.1 ( I'm wonder about that bcoz changing the screen resolutin is one of the control we should have in control pannel. )
Thanks & Regards, SAMEER :))

What graphics card and monitor (not followed the post closely). BTW Philip is (mostly) right. It is mainly a monitor problem but will also depend on the sync start and pixel clock.

Monitor : Samtel sv410 At least this is what written at the back of the monitor, but Linux ( & windows also ) detect it as SAM d556)
Graphics Card : sis6326 with 4MB ram.

Even I think so, bcoz my windows box gives me proper resoluton. Also Caldera has given me proper resoluton. Also when I go to text mode it is proper. The problem occurs with X only. There must be way around it.
P.S. During the installation in X configration I tested I checked all the there resolution settings & it was proper with 1024x768 but after the installatin, when I boot to linux it was not proper. So I'm very much sure the problem is with X settings & not with monitor.
Thanks & Regards, SAMEER :)

This means that you should get good resolution irrespective of the distro you use. You should have saved the XF86config file when removing Caldera. I had a similar problem with my Trident card. But when I installed Caldera once (just for experimenting different distros), it set me up with excellent settings as far as X was concerned. So, I saved the XF86config file and used it when I installed Red Hat later.
Can you post your "ModeLine" from your XF86config file ?
Rajen.

I thought, I'm the only person having this type of problem.

Hay! Thanks. I was not knowing this idea. I will defenately do this next time.

There are many modelines defiend & I don't know which one to send so I'm sending the whole XF86Config file as an attachment removing unwanted part to reduce the size of attachment.
Thanks & Worm Regards, SAMEER :)
P.S. One more thing, When I configured my monitor resolution in Caldera I found the resolution is proper with these two settings. Resolutin : 1024x768 800x600 Refresh Rate : 60Hz 60Hz Hori.Sync : 48.4KHz 37.8KHz Mode Clk : 65MHz 40MHz
Hope this may help you to locate the problem.

you need to uncomment in your Section "Device" VideoRam 4096
Change your svga screen section as under DefaultColorDepth 24 Subsection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1024x768" "800x600" ViewPort 0 0 EndSubsection
To further optimize run xvidtune from xterm. Play around with the settings. When things are satisfactory click show. cut and paste the modeline to your XF86Config modeline section. Comment out the existing modeline.

Will mail you my XF86Config file tommorow. My home machine uses Sam D556 and SIS6326. The card to be selected is no. 621 (IIRC). Works perfectly 1024x768 24 bpp and 1280x1024 24bpp with slight distortion on the l & r edges.

Please check what refresh rates your monitor supports and check weather they are the ones used in the XF86config. This file has all the details and is well commented.

I have checked this file. there are listed different refresh rates with each screen resolution. I think, I have to check these refresh rates. But don't know how to change the refresh rate.
