Try booting into single user mode and go through the /var/log/messages files ... It might have some clue as to why the login is failing. Also after booting into single-user mode check the /etc/pam.d/system-auth file (check it against some properly running linux machine) HTH --Nikhil.

Is it a fresh install? If yes, did you encounter any error messages?
If not, what did you change recently?
Such things are unlikely to happen for a plain vanilla installation, unless you were doing something that affected the authentication process without your knowledge.
Sameer.
Dilip,
I suppose the problem lies with pam configuration, check the file /etc/lpam.d/login.
