Where can I get SuSE 8.0 (that is the latest version I think). Some place near Powai would be really nice. We need to install SuSE on one of the Dept. servers, since Oracle is apparently supported only on SuSE!

Not true. I have had Oracle 8.1.x working on Redhat 5.x, Redhat 6.2, Redhat 7.0 and Debian (unstable).
Here is one of the several sites which describe the install process:

Thanks for all the help guys! It finally worked on RedHat 7.2 The sysad discorvered that the problem lies in binutils, due to which only the installation crashes. They downgraded binutils, installed Oracle and restored the binutils. Now everything works just fine!
