here is a question, thanks for answering in advance.
i need a linux server to be installed. i have 10-12 windows clients. on the server i want file sharing print server backup (automatic) firewall proxy server.
i have fedora core1 and samba. i will get webmin also. can u tell me wht else would i need. and what type of configuration would the machine need.
one more thing, three machines have tally on them. now the solution i have thought about is to have the data of the tally saved on the linux server. the clients will receive it from there and the tally will read the data.
tell me if this is possible and sugest how because i have not tried the tally part.
thanks again. Vinod.

Following is the list of the Disappointments with linux as of today..
******May be in future it (linux) will over come.******
It can play DVD's thank you.
There are lot of legal issues that need to be tackled.
Cant play OGG without using plugin.
No OS can play all arbitrary kinds of media without libraries. Plugins are a nice way of doing that. Windows too cannot play these without libraries. :-| Ever heard of the windows acm ?
The plugin you have at your disposal depends upon the choice of the OS.
A/V chats clients are disappointing.
Which one have you tried ? I use yodel sometimes and am quite happy with it thank you.
There is an inconsistency in the application that are bundled along with the various distribution
That is not GNU/Linux's problem. We can write multisession CD's through GNU/Linux too.
Nero in windows allows a multisession cd to be burnt with disc at once options . This CD does not work in linux.
Such an one is an impossibility.
As in todays world we have different flavours for different purpose like for the one which i mentioned..
Unite to build an OS which handles everthing for everyone
missed to quote further......unite to build an OS which handles everything for everyone in different flavours.
what i earlier quoted in my earlier mail....
Linux has some inherent advantages as stability, cost less, and has hundreds of free software options. moreover no piracy issues. It is best when it comes to security and more or less immune to virus threats.
And finally yes we all agree on this
This is an ideal scenario. But everyone is different. First decide what do you want from your OS, then choose the one. If you are not satisfied , choose another.... As for a start why not start using both Windows and Linux ? I've seen that it is frustrating at times when in your adrenaline rush , you remove Windows, install Linux and expect Linux just to be Windows. It certainly has a learning curve and once you get used to it you'll wonder how did you get on with your life without it :)

And I was talking that those perceived disappointments do not exist.
The plugin you have at your disposal depends upon the choice of the OS.
But what strech of imagination do take /this/ as a disappointment with the GNU/Linux OS ? :-O
There is an inconsistency in the application that are bundled along with the various distribution
so ? Stick with one distribution. How similar is Win95 with WinXP ? or the applications which come with the OS ? BTW what about giving us an example of this 'disappointment' ?
Nero in windows allows a multisession cd to be burnt with disc at once options . This CD does not work in linux.
eh ? So, dont use Nero.
