hello, in the process of making the people foss aware, I got a contract from a semi gnu/linux aware NGO called uva. the problem however is that they already have a few p4 1.5 ghz computers running ubuntu 6.06 and they seam to have got stuck to it because as what the authorities told me, they get good support from the ubuntu forums when the needs come. now they have decided to buy new computers but are also aware (and sportingly except the fact ) that latest hardware may not work with ubuntu 6.06 lts. for them long time support matters really much and I did not really argue about that. since my recent experience with 102 ggc motherboards has not been good with ubuntu, I will like to know names of some motherboards which are available in the market that can work or have been successfully made to work with ubuntu. my requirements are as follows. 1. the boards should be actively supported and still sold in the hardware market. this is because if by chance there is a problem with those boards I must get relatively quick service. 2. the boards should support seluron 2.8 ghz and p4 3 + ghz processors. 3. I will be of course putting 512 mb of ram into the machine. 4. ubuntu should be known to detect and install the on-board sound card. 5. the lan card should also work. I gave all this details because I don't want to go through the troma of my recent experiences (ronny knows very well what I am talking isn't it?) It seams that the place where I tried the ggc mobo gave so many problems that they eventually have postponed the decision a bit for the next ubuntu version. any ways the point is that I have a hint that mobos which came in market before june 2006 or aug 2006 at the most should be well supported. I want to be with the debian group of distros because ceneors like jtd have justified the reasons to do so. regards. Krishnakant.

In my opinion, anything based on the Intel 945 chip-set should work out of the box. Take a look at the Intel D945PSN mother board. It supports the processors that you intend to use and should be very cheap now. I guess even the 950 or 965 chip-set ones would work fine too. The 102 GGC mother board doesn't run on an Intel chip set at all. May be that caused all those issues. Hope that helps,
Regards, BG

ok so 915 or 945 motherboards will work it seams? now there are 2 major questions. firstly are the mother boards still available in the market and are they still actively supported? by actively I mean if some chipset is giving problem how fast is the service? secondly, I am interested in p4 3 ghz processors. I herd that there are only pinless processores available now a days? is that true? and I will be installing on a sata hdd. so given all this if I choose gigabyte will it be a good choice? regards. Krishnakant.

Generally a week or two if you directly give it to the Gigabyte SC. Intel takes almost a month. Nowadays they respond very slowly to the emails. The problems I have rarely got in Gig 915 are no power on trigger to the SMPS. That too on a pc that kept going off a few times due to power cuts/trips. Always use an earthed power point or your mobo will get spoiled.
secondly, I am interested in p4 3 ghz processors. I herd that there are only pinless processores available now a days? is that true?
Upto 845 it was a pin processor. Then from 915, 101, 102ggc it was pinless and with SATA support. 945 and 102 ggc have DDR2 RAM.
and I will be installing on a sata hdd. so given all this if I choose gigabyte will it be a good choice?
Ask your supplier about the Gigabyte board. SATA support is no problem for the new distros. No idea about 945 chipset.

Rony.

hello roni and others. so i am deciding to settle on 945 gigabyte mother board. I forgot to mention that I would prefer ddr2 ram which ronny did not forget. so any experiences with 945 boards? what about 965 boards? regards. krishnakant.

Don't even think of 965. :)
945 is supported by Ubuntu as per the web and I saw the driver packages in the Synaptec ( Apt ) list. Search for 915 in your packages and 3 packages for Intel chipsets 800 and 900 will show up.

You can go for Gigabyte 915 motherboards which support Celeron and P4 ( single core ) and Ubuntu has support for 915. Gigabyte people are good in support. The mobo will have 3 years warranty. Those who use this board could add their user experience with Debian or Ubuntu.
