configure to boot your machine using DHCP, that should work.
and this had been asked many times. google or mailing list archived would had helped, i guess.

I had made this note some time back for the lug site. It may be useful to you. It is related to MTNL's broadband so use equivalent conventions.

Setting Up MTNL TRIBAND In Linux.

MTNL's Triband service comes with an ADSL modem that is supplied with the broadband connection and this note is intended to help and encourage those triband users to use this service in Linux.
The ADSL modem comes with two ports, USB and Ethernet. The USB interface has drivers only for the Windows(R) operating system so the only choice for connecting the modem in Linux is the ethernet port using the ethernet/LAN cable that is supplied with the modem. The ADSL modem has a built-in DHCP server so the ethernet card in the Linux box can be setup with a Static IP address or a Dynamic IP address which will be provided by the modem's DHCP server.
Using Static IP Address:-
For this type of setup, use an IP address within the range 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254 Please note that 192.168.1.1 is reserved for the modem which will be the ethernet's gateway. Here are the IP address settings given below. IP Address : 192.168.1.X Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Edit your file /etc/resolv.conf to manually add the two entries given below. nameserver 203.94.227.70 nameserver 203.94.243.70
Now restart your computer and you will be ready to surf the net.
Using Dynamic IP Address (DHCP):-
Simply enable DHCP for your ethernet card. Restart your computer. Your IP address, subnet mask and default gateway will be automatically set. However your DNS server entries will be 192.168.1.1. This is because the ADSL modem itself supplies a DNS server address of 192.168.1.1. This will not allow you to open websites as your DNS will not work. Open a web browser that has javascript and cookies enabled. Type 192.168.1.1 in your address bar and hit enter. Enter your login name and password and you will be taken to your modem's settings. By default they are 'admin' and 'admin'. Go to Home > DHCP. In this window, locate the setting DNS Mode --> Auto or Manual. Select Manual and enter 203.94.227.70 for Primary DNS and 203.94.243.70 for Secondary DNS.
Go to Tools > System and click the button 'Save and Reboot'. Once your modem has rebooted properly, reboot your system. Now any Linux box with DHCP is ready to surf the net.
For extra security, please login to the MTNL website and change your default password for your user name that is your Telephone number. Then register this change in your modem's settings by logging into 192.168.1.1 and go to Advanced > ATM VCC and locate the entry Username that is your Telepphone number. Change the password below to the new password you created on the MTNL website. Click on the 'Apply' button. Go to Tools > Admin and change your admin password too for more security. Click on the 'Apply' button. Once the changes are made go to Tools > System and click 'Save and Reboot'. Reboot your system now.
Enabling the Firewall:-
The ADSL modem also has a built-in firewall that is disabled by default. To enable it, log into your modem at 192.168.1.1 and go to Advanced > Firewall and tick mark all the entries that you would not use from the internet. Go to ATM VCC and in the Firewall option select 'Enabled'. Go to Tolls > System and click 'Save and Reboot'. Reboot your system.
Now you are all set for a mode safe and secure internet usage.
