Because keyboard shortcuts make life MUCH simpler. The same reason why the command line is much faster at manipulating text.
In that case other keys can be used. And Javascript can handle those. See 'access keys'.

Thank you, but that is just one in the many minor bumps which i am sure will be resolved or gotten used to. The bigger picture is: Who all are going to walk the walk? that is what is needed now. Maybe the next LUG meet could have a section on this and take this project up in a loosely formal way? If not, then some of us could get together in parallel and initiate the exercise?

If by who is going to walk the walk, you mean who is going to actually write code, I have said more than once that I will -- if a domain expert will tell me what's needed.
